yesterday's lunch with the editor was interesting.  the part i really got into was a school budget which did not allow for any   out of classroom teaching-- as in science... when in fact it totally lacked in the concept of scientic thought process.   no budget????? and as i sit--- right next to my bed is a collection of the plastic hoses used to drip saline into a patient...  the ammount of  still sterile hose

tossed away by any hospital in 24 hours is enought to entertain and educate 237 high school seniors as to how to get a rubber ducky from the atlantic to the pacific...

ok that is complicated....

try this... ever seen a "regular" high school kid.. try and get a nail either into a board -- or heaven forbid-- how to lever one out of a board..--- they could learn so much. about levers from one nail........or...they could learn so much with one 2 x 4 and a big rock--- neither of which is very expensive--  ok... so use a small tree...
the concept of work-- a force causing movement. or a paycheck--- is missing somewhere...

there was a discussion ... sort of in amazement... that when a dairy farmer wants to take a few days off. they have to get another dairy farmer to cover milking their herd too.... i totally believe it--- and teh reason why... only they would take the project seriously enough........ as one " animal person" to another........   if i am hiring ( as i used to be...) i would take a 4h kid ahead of a girl scout any day.. the. girl scout would be great at cake decorationg, but the 4h kid would always note an empty water bucket.  and furthermore... would be there "to feed"... it was shocking to hear a bunch of "city" people trying to figure out that one.

i said "It is about to. rain"  means something entirerly different to someone struggling to get the hay in the barn nice and dry.... i have literally been in tears watching 2 seniors in a prominent high school try and use a crow bar to lift a fence post.... when i finally put one rock in place and stepped on th e other end  using my ( significant) weight and it lifted...  they were shocked.  they had no idea...turns out... for budgetary reasons our kids are not allowed to learn... at least in school.  i bet there is alot of legal reasons too....i always wonder just how many kids were maimed by a see-saw... that thing was lethal, you hardly see them now..   

work... farm kids.... i remember. bruins  hockey player. wayne cashman -- his wife lynn was a horse friend of mine... and they were at the house one day just after a 30 ton  load of hay had been delivered..

i had stuck my hand in the middle of a pile and it was warmer than i thought it should be----  waynes family in canada were hay farmers... so he got in the loft.. and he and his  brother decided they did not like how. the hay was stacked either...--- so they threw 30 tons out the door into the yard -- then simply threw it back in that loft door and. restacked it their way-- i don't think it took them an hour and neither raised a sweat....  so much for being a farm kid.  that was daily life.... you. stay fit and ready.
