dec 2 2020 elec collar

Speaking of quick training .. the electric dog collar does have its place in the world it's a very small place but there is a place for it ...we have a dog entirely too thrilled to chase squirrels so I'm going to try the collar to get him to stop it .. the collor that I'm using is the Garmin   and I chose that because it has a distinct tone then vibration then shock.... three buttons ..  so I spent the day coming up with very odd size batteries Duracell 123A which I've already ordered a bunch don't send me any and then an MB 21/23 which apparently is the one that's in things like garage door openers .  having gotten them running  I thought it a great opportunity to educate everybody here about their use /.    I started with Bella --and she could hear the sound very nicely which I couldn't hear and then the vibration and then I started the shock the electric shock at the lowest value i could rotate it From 1 to 18 .  personally I couldn't even feel it till #10 .. so I started her at one and she could feel it at three ..
\so then I tried Haley college age sort of and it as she could feel it at #4 then Judy who has shall I say she's a bit longer in the tooth to use a horse expression Judy didn't feel it till 7 and Lynn likewise #7 and even at that it was just a tiny little tingle I imagine by the time you get to 18 it's a pretty good belt but we hope not to have to use that .,...the concept is you speak to the dog and if they ignore you then you push the libration which should startle them and if they then behave themselves fine .
but they have to learn....   that the vibration is just what happens before that shock and even at a slight tingle they're not going to like it ....dogs don't like electricity .

wanting to go full circle we bought some stuff toys and don't forget I still have that squirrel urine on my desk so somehow between the squirrels and the urine and the collar I'm hoping we can educate the dog to decide that is not worth chasing squirrels  ..

I have two more collaors   which I bought long ago in the process of teaching a riot --who is deaf ---They only vibrate ..  no shock involved ..  I figure I will give those to the recipient so they don't have any chance or pushing a wrong button in the excitement

We do have a service dog of ours that needed to be trained with a shock collar ... when she lived here at crazy acres she loved to chase the frogs in the pond and that was wonderful until she moved to Florida and they were things like alligators in the ponds .. so she had to be very quickly and abruptly educated about alligators and crocodiles and things like that
the only other time I've used electric color was on somebody's doberman that was killing cats so I got a cat outside the guest house and the dog running loose with the collar on saw that cat and went to chase it ..I think I got him with his mouth open just over the cat I pushed the button the dog flipped over backwards and he never chased another cat ...
But starting with a well trained dog is just being naughty we really have to teach the dog that chasing squirrels is not a preferred thing to do .. .
Some of these herding dogs that take to chasing cars can we retrain with electric collar if you get him before they get too close to the car .

I hope Pam finds some more people to help with the overnight 7 to 7 it's a very simple thing to do until it's not simple like last night everything was quiet all night long until the goat got her head stuck through the hay bag and people began to call on the phone and tell me the the goat was going to strangle himself well he could have but we got down there----that that's what an overnight person does is deal with all the emergencies that can happen between 7:00 at night and seven in the morning and these are things that I used to do but I cannot do any longer ---so I really we do need somebody with all these animals we need somebody on deck and they can sleep and doze because believe me the camera people will wake you up for anything goes wrong    they can see ..
these camera people have a good five years training as crazy acres watchers when when we started with the cameras there was a learning curve where people called me for all kinds of problems that they weren't used to looking at ...    like there's a bird in the barn    ....OK it won't do anything about that there's a lot of things in the barn we don't do anything about ...... it's been a shock for everybody to get used to looking at things like that ...certainly a goat with that a stuck in head stuck in the hay bag needs attention although goats seem to do remarkably well getting stuck various places and getting themselves unstuck but I'm glad people called and I'm also glad I could send our  overnight person down to get him with a pair of scissors remember we do have in that same pen the mother donkey who is extremely protective of her child so I warned not to go anywhere near that that baby donkey mommy is very opinionated about it ..

the overnight job can get very taxing when we have puppies or more specifically a mother in labor then you have to be right there all night long and no sleeping on that job it is possible for a Great Dane mother to get very tired producing puppies and sleep on one or two so we always have somebody right there to supervise the puppies as she continues with labor and for the next week when she's a little bit too tired to care about it anyway we're very fortunate to have help with that ...

I think the great excitement today or tomorrow will be a chimney guy coming to inspect the chimney this is American chimney they don't charge for the inspection which is very nice tired of that ... we must make progress it's getting cold

--OK Jim honey did an amazing thing last night   ==  the overnight sitter was watching Mail call on her cell phone and Germany heard the word BASKET and hopped out of bed and went and got it at 2:00 o'clock in the morning without any prompting at all .. he is an exceptionally astute dog .. and I really should work on more challenges for him it would be wonderful to make him into a seeing eye dog .. but that involves walking miles and I don't know of a quick way to do it .
I'll think about it

WENDY RETIRED... geLLATO TOOK OVR... ALMOST
hi Carlene,

Hope you are well! This wonderful picture came up in my Facebook memories today and wanted to share it with you and say thank you once again. In the picture, Wendy had been with Hunter for a couple months and Hunter was so tiny and only 7. Also it was a nice memory with SDP Santa... Santa Frank will be missed. Hope that you can see the picture and enjoy it!

Since Covid, Hunter has not been out and about like normal. Gelli went to school with him for 2 weeks before our school closed. Hunter and Gelato are doing well even without being as active as normal. Hunter is doing simultaneous learning at home via computer, which means minimal work for Gelli. Gelli has done great when Hunter has gone out, for appointments, procedures and  quick trip to the store. It is so funny how different Gelli is from Wendy, from body build to hair type to personality. Wendy is enjoying retirement! She's has more of a spring in her step with Gelli here, but let's him know she's top dog when she's has enough.

When we are able again, we will be down to visit!

Stay safe and take care!
