"they " say a normal hay bale is 40 pounds.... thereby lays a tale...
HAY IS FED BY TEH POUND-- A NORMAL HORSE NEEDS ABOUT 20 POUNDS OF HAY A DAY.
HAY IS SOLD BY THE BALE-- SO WHEN YOU GO TO THE HAY STORE AND ASK HOW MUCH THEIR BALES WEIGH - YOU WILL BE TOLD 40 POUNDS- AND THEY WILL HAVE 2 STRINGS HOLDING THEM TOGETHER.
TAKE THEM HOME AND GET OUT YOuR BATHROOM SCALE AND YOU WILL RArely find a 40 pound bale--- they are more like 35 pounds --- just like the 1 pound box of cereal now contains 14.7 ounces and the extra charge for a bandaid at the emergency room. the concept is ubiquitous- and annoying.
so about these 35 pound bales and their 2 hay strings-- if those strings are cut next to teh knot they become one of a farms most valuable assets. you will find them all over holding things up, down, and together.. teh current stings are blue-- 30 years ago they were pink--- so around crazy acres you can tell how long ago we made a temporary fix with a hay string.--
