i have had several notices about the "new" tick disease-- i think it was kansas... however... i count on george (dvm) to know about things like that-- that way i can avoid the panic "sky is falling" type rumors that are more fad than fact.. that is his job... and everyone keeps telling me to deligate... well i have-- that stuff is his problem... if he thinks i need to know, i am sure he will tell me. he is on the board of directors- and i see or talk to him many times weekly.. so i told him about the emails i have had... and got this.....
"Heard about the tick disease. Very rare here right now but seen in Africa"
ok- george, i don't want to tempt fate-- but if you think our dog has that.. then do something...
the entire concept of "fashionable illnesses and cures" is fodder for the internet . i had an email about jp yousha( a really big respectable dane show breeder) about an eye test to prevent breeding a dog where all the pups go blind. i have no idea why there was then some reference to harl danes from europe.
maybe i will find out, but i have had alot of euro danes and blindness has never been an issue.. maybe i will get caught... but there comes a point where if you worry about every known ailment of dogs, you would never own one.
teh only eye issue i can remember is one dog with lowered tear production- which we treated for a whlile - then forgot about it... she died at 11 from bone cancer with perfect vision...
maybe that eye issue is recessive and not breeding related dogs eliminates that problem...
breeding animals is a crap shoot anyway- and anyone who says otherwise has not had enough experience. We deal with the hand we are given...
so far so good.... fate is the hunter...

and then janine came in--- with tales of 2 friends of her's that now go to new york every 2 weeks for "treatment " by some lyme clinic where they are injected with saline solution to prevent lyme disease. $300 cash per treatment--not covered by insurance... the dr. there is a phd.. not md...
grace and i immediately jumped on that one-- we have a carton of saline solution -- and she is a "injectable" type nurse -- janine a phd--- we are all set to charge them $299...cash and save them the trip to nyc...
which brings to mind--- my husband ( md-- family practice) who used to give out B12 shots to little old ladies monthly--- because it did no harm, he had to do something, and they felt better after the shot.
same thing with scott ( a vet at georges) ---said if he told us to give pepto to a dog he would be treating us, not the dog...
***********
to change the topic-- ann getchell -- who reads this occasionally gets on my case about extra words... i have had comments from her about my grammer which lord knows is in a sad state of repair... but .....
that sentence ----I HAVE HAD --- is a perfect example-- you con't need the HAVE. -- she tells me..
sorry...
sheila comes north on 2/25--- it is supposed to snow that day...
