First second and third---- this cow -ZEBU. does not know what a bucket is -----has never had any grain in a bucket or anywhere else---- and furthermore to get in front of her with those pointy horns is a very bad idea---- those horns are serious and can do massive danger --- she doesn't know what people are she sees them as enemy so that's not going to work-----So what is usually done in this kind of situation is you get aROPE. which we did and let it drag so you could pick it up without getting close to her -----and if you can get the rope around something else you can then pull the cow away from you which is critical with those pointy horns ----if you can pull a cow away from you and get her head tiEd- up really close to whatever you TIED to the wall tree whatever---- that at least eliminates the pointy horns and maybe you could sneak in an patter or at least touch her----- if you can possibly avoid her hind end which she's very clever with------ their back feet kicking -----cows could kick all directions ----generally horses kind of kick backwards but cows could kick sideways so she's dangerous from that angle too------ I have suggested to Matt that maybe get her tide to the wall and put hay bales next to her so that she can't kick and then maybe we would be able to touch her or patter or something ------ any rate he has done that to the wall bit--------that as far as horses are concerned is called learning to respect a rope ------ she has no respect for rope yet----- but it it's happening -----
so he took her outside and if you watched the way he sort of played with her with tightening the rope and relaxing THEN tightening and relaxing that's very much what we do with a brand new puppy where they begin to fly backwards and try and run away the other direction things like that it's exactly what the puppies do it's just a little more massive------What he is trying to do is to turn her head toWArd him and then relax the rope-------he does it over and over and over again which is kind of what we do with puppies so although it may have looked horrible to some people... I didn't think look bad at all ......I thought it was very good ----I was slightly concerned that she ran at him which she eventually tried ...in the process of trying to get her back in the stall ----he was a little closer to her than he should have been and she came at him with her horns .....I think he did cut his hand but he managed to jump behind the gate that has the yellow tarp on it and steer her into the stall with that ...but by that time she had she had figured out that she could run toWAred him and he'd run -----this is a bad thing .. fortunately he's been around a lot of wild cattle in his life and if there's anybody capable of gentling this beast it'll be maTT. 'cause I don't want anybody else even in the stall with her.
Elvis is so nice and pleasant ...because he was bottle fed as a baby .. This is not totally unlike our choice to spoon feed the puppies-----puppies so very quickly learn that humans provide food that they are willing to transfer some of their relationSHIP from their mother to whoever's got the spoon -----well this happened to Elvis who learned to like grain and things and buckets but it is not happened to this lady cow.. you can't even get a bucket in front of her whether it's got grain in it or not..
Now I know that. only all these zoo shows on TV show what have been wild animals being trained to put their shoulder up to a wall so they could have injections or whatever and they certainly do a fabulous job at training but that's not how it starts ------keep in mind that you can edit out stuff on television --------somewhere someone has had to trap that animal the animal was not happy about it----that's the phase we're going through with Our LadyCOW..... she's got to accept Halter in the rope that's going to be a noisy lively episode in her life which hopefully she will get over -----cows are smarter than horses.--- but she's had a really rough start and it may take awhile
please don't send me all these things saying how I should sit in front of her with a bag of grain------ I'm not going to do that ----neither is anybody else for the moment eventually we will be able to but we're certainly not going to do it now and we're not going to do it even if she gets these brass bALLS PUT ON HER horns -----those horns are tough whether they have balls on THEM. or not
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WATCH. DR POL (NAT'L GEO) -----NOTE HOW DIFERENTLY HE TREATS THE WILD ANGUS FROM THE DAIRY COW
so that's my episode for the day
