DOGS- NO WAY AM I A WHISPERER..... I RARELY WHISPER....MAYBE I COULD BE THE DOG OBSERVER-ER -
BEFORE ANYONE SAYS "EVERYONE THINKS THEIR DOG IS TEH BEST DOG EVER..." I THINK I AM A LITTLE MORE OBJECTIVE- ONLY BECAUSE OF MY HISTORY OF HANDLING, BORROWING, AND OWNING SO MANY DIFFERENT DOGS OVER THE YEARS OF PRINT AND MOVIE BUSINESS. I HAVE OPINIONS ( IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW THAT....:)
I DON'T THINK DANES ARE THE BEST DOG EVER-- IT DEPENDS ON WHat you want of a dog...
if success to you is to go sit in a swamp and shoot a duck and have your dog splash into the water and grab the dead duck and bring it back to you, a dane would be your worst choice... if you want your dog to sit at a poker table and explain to you if the other guy is out of aces by the way he holds his cards, then a dane is.. maybe.. your best choice.... in a word??? SAGACIOUS would be that word. -- the only other dog breed i have owned or handled that tends to be like that is a corgi. OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE MANY OTHER DIFFERENCES -- LIKE THE CORGI HAS LESS BULK TO GET INto MOTION-- WE HAVE CHIPMUNKS RUNNING ALL OVER OUR YARD.. SEVERAL LIVE IN TEH T TENT UNDER THE COBBLE STONE FLOOR- OUR YOUNGER DANES MAY TRY AND CATCH THEM- OUR OLDEER DANES HAVE GIVEN UP[--- HOWEVER IF WE HAD CORGI'S WE WOULD HAVE FEWER CHIPMUNKS.
EXAMPLES....
*TAKE 3 DOGS-- ASLEEP ON THE SOFA-- AND A NOISE HAPPENS IN THE YARD.... A JACK RUSSELL ( WANDA) IS ON HER FEET AT TEH WINDOW WITH THE YIP AND NIP APPROACH TO EVERYTHING.....WHERE A YELLOW LAB WILL PICK THEIR HEAD UP TO STUDY WHATEVER IS HAPPENING, A DANE IS MORE INCLINED TO JUST ROLL THIER EYES TO OBSERVE, BEFORE DECIDING WHETHER TO MOVE OR NOT.... THAT EYE ROLL IS TYPICAL...
*IF YOU LIKE TO PLAY TUG OF WAR ... GET A DOG WITH BULDGING JAW MUSCLES AND MUSHED IN NOSE- THEY HAVE BEEN BRED TO GRAB HOLD AND HANG ON-- EVEN TO THE EXTENT THAT THIER NOSE IS MUSHED TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF THEIR JAWS.. LOVELY DOGS-- EVERY ONE... SOMETIMES MISDIRECTED BY HUMANS ....NOT MEAN-- JUST HAVING FUN... THEY GRAB AND HANG ON WITH EYES FIXED ON TEH OBJECT.--- IF A DANE HAS SOMETHING IN I,S MOUTH THEY WILL SIDE OVER WITH THE TYPICAL EYE ROLL, AND SWING IT IN YOUR DIERCTION TO INVITE YOU TO PARTICIPATE.
* DON'T BE SURPRISED IF YOUR SHEEP HERDING DOG CHASES CARS-- IT IS IN THIER BLOOD TO CHASE Anything that moves...
*DON'T BE SURPRISED IF YOUR BEAGLE WILL NOT KEEP HIS NOSE OFF THE GROUND JUST IN CASE A RABBIT MIGHT BE AROUND EVEN IN A SHOPPING MALL.
* YOU WANT TO THROW LOTS OF STICKS OR YELLOW TENNES BALLS? GOLDENS AND LABS ARE YOUR DOGS ..... DANES CAN BE TAUGHT TO RETRIEVE... WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY.
**
i remember--- i was in weston mass speaking to ?4h group? about dogs in general-- before my sdp phase...I had my current stud dog "thumper " with me- someone in teh audience said-- " the trouble with danes is tehy don't retrieve" - so i pulled out my wallet and dropped it. i asked thump to pick it up.. he got up came over , picked it up and handed it to me. nice as could be.. some one said " i did n't see that can you do it aqgaIN" i dropped it again and asked him o pick it up--- the look he gave me and what he said could not b e printed here-- so i bent over and picked it up myself--- danes are not robots.
I GUESS MY ADVICE IS "PLAN AHEAD"
**********
another goldie moment.... you people think i am nuts with janine needing a refrigerator and getting one from the neighbors garage the next day----
i did not mention the fact that tuesdaY was my last swig of bedtime brandy-- 1/2 shot-- empty bottle... put it in the recycle bin WED morning... and at 2:56pm WED.. appeared on my desk a new bottle of hiram walker blackberry brandy. i had not told anyone i was running low... no one saw teh e empty bottle---- it just happened... like alot of thigns happen here...
APPARENTLY GOLDIE TOLD MARGE ( CP NEW YORK) THAT I WAS RUNNING LOW.
