MARCH 16 2015
IT IS A KNOWN FACT THAT I LOVE A GOOD ARGUEMENT-- BUT THE LATEST IS NOT EVEN A GOOD ONE...

WE SENT ZENA TO JANET AT NEW HORIZONS FOR A SPECIFIC PURPOSE... TO BE TRAINED IN SERVICE
WORK FOR  ETTA'S HUSBAND- AND TO RAISE A LITTER OR TWO- BRED TO A LAB.

HISTORY -- JANET IS MORE HIGHLY RESPECTED IN ADI THAN I AM.
 ?PROOF?
SHE IS ALLOWED TO BRING A DOG TO THE ADI CONFERENCES THAT STILL HAD TESTICLES.
I WAS TOLD NOT TO.- AND AT THE TIME IT WAS MY PERFECT STUD DOG THUMPER.
HERS WAS A GOOD DOG TOO. A GOLDEN...   I  REMIND HER OF THAT CONSTANTLY.
I AM DELIGHTED THAT SHE HAS TEH  FORTITUDE TO  EVEN MENTION TRaining a 1/2 dane..
PLUS I AM SURE IF SHE HAS A BUNCH OF PUPS JANET WILL SHARE ONE OR TWO WITH US.

THE ARGUEMENT IS REALLY JUST-- IS A DOG  A DOG?
I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT  OF  BEING ABLE TO  PREDICT THE  RESULTS OF PUREBRED BREEDING.
AND THERE ARE TOO MANY DOGS IN GENERAL DUE TO VERY ODD CONCEPTS LIKE
" I WANT HER TO HAVE A LITTER THEN I WILL SPAY"  OR  HEAVEN  FORBID MEN WHO SAY
"  I JUST CAN NOT NEUTER MY  DOG"-- COMPLICATED BY THE FACT THAT ALOT OF
PEOPLE WOUL D LIKE A DOG AND CAN NOT AFFORD THE VET COSTS TO HAVE IT DONE- SO THEY DON'T AND ACCIDENTS HAPPEN.
ALSO,  THERE ARE AN AWFUL LOT OF PUREBRED DOGS PRODUCED IN THE QUEST FOR THE PERFECT SHOW ANIMAL-- IN THE CASE OF  HARL DANES, ONES WITH SPOTS INTHE CORRECT PLACES-- PREFERABLY ON THE LEFT BECAUSE THAT IS THE SIDE THE JUDGE SEES AS THEY GO ROUND THE RING.

IN MY CASE-- I LIKE DANES... I ALSO LIKE SHORTER STRONGER  DANES THAN THE USUALL TALL GRACEFUL SHOW DOGS.
I AM GOING ON THE AMISH ADVICE THAT IN A STURDY WORK ANIMAL TEH LEG IS HALF THE HEIGHT.. IT IS THE FOOTBALL PLAYER   VS THE BASKETBALL PLAYER.. FOR OUR SERVICE WORK WE NEED THE FOOTBALL PLAYER TYPES.---- EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE A REALLY TALL DOG APPEARS IN MY PUPS...  "GEORGE " WITH BELLA IS ONE OF THEM. (FOLLOW THEM ON FACEBOOK BELLA AND GEORGE  ( PICTURES OF GEORGE INT HE HOSPITAL BED WITH BELLA ARE PRICELESS.)

I AM REMINDED EVERY TIME I GO TO THE FEED STORE WHERE AN EMPLOYEE TELLS ME  THAT MY DANES ARE A "BUNCH OF JUNK" BECAUSE I BREED DOGS THAT DO NOT HAVE A CHAMPION TITLE.
I HAVE HEARD IT ALL.

SO FOR THOSE WHO QUESTION....  FYI...
I /WE  DO NOT SELL PUPS... OR DOGS..  WE DONATE THEM AS SERVICE DOGS, FACILITY DOGS (OR FABULOUS FAILURES USUALLY TO OUR VOLUNTEERS.) ALL ARE REQUIRED TO DO SOME  COMMUNITY SERVICE WITH THEM-
ALL OUR DOGS ARE CHIPPED- WITH SERVICE DOG PROJECT AS THE SECOND "OWNER"

WE HAVE A HUGE PILE OF APPLICANTS- THE DEMAND IS  GREAT- WE CAN USE ALL THE GOOD PUPS WE  CAN GET.
WE HAVE TRIED USING  RESCUE DOGS- AND FOUND IT WAS A BAD CHOICE TO SPEND $20,000 TRAINING A RESCUE DOG OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN  ONLY TO HAVE SOME HEALTH ISSUE SURFACE.
OUR SUCCESS WITH RESCUES WAS 10%- OUR SUCCESS WITH HOME BREDS IS 60-70%-  YOU DO THE MATH.

OUR DOGS ARE NOT VALUABLE- THEY ARE INVALUABLE.

HERE IS THE LETTER I GOT FROM POOR ETTA WHO IS NOT USED TO TEH TURMOIL OF INTERNET LIVING.
*******
Hi Carlene,
I am so sorry that posting the picture of Zena has created such
a controversy. I am quite distressed at some of the reactions. I also greatly
appreciate the many wonderful comments and good will wishes.

The desire to
add a Great Dane is something New Horizons Service Dogs has considered for quite
some time. It was not a hasty decision. NHSD is a non- profit organization,
and has been in business for about 20 years, providing labs and goldens for
people with mobility issues, children with autism, and veterans with
disabilities. NHSD is also a member of ADI and IAADP. The NHSD breeding
program is closely monitored by the director for health and temperament issues.
Only dogs with quality bloodlines are used in the breeding program

My
husband's service dog is a Dane/Lab. She has the calm temperament of the Dane,
and the retrieving ability of the Lab. He is tall, so the added height is a
plus for his mobility issues. She has changed his life for the better, and he
depends on her for many things. When he is sitting on his recliner, she will
lay across his legs, providing warmth, better than a heating pad. He would be
very distressed without her.

We love Zena. Everyone I have introduced her to
thinks she is a beautiful dog (including a veterinarian). Zena will continue
her service dog training, and will be a back-up dog for my husband. I will
continue to send you updates and pictures.

We are looking forward enhancing
the ability of both you and New Horizons to provide quality service dogs to
those that need. them.

Thank you again.
