You all have to believe in goldie ---- our Ghost Of the Lefthand Drawer— who arrainges things without my knowledge...

Yesterday I got an email saying someone had sent 3 cases of puppy food.. and I thought that was lovely in general... then.. last night.... I got an email – someone was given 2 female harl pups and they  were a bit much ... they sent a picture that is so darn cute, I could not say no...... besides haley and lynne said the same thing.... we do have room.....   tho   ---we could stand  someone to help as barn/groundskeeper.. some younger type for lifting heavy things etc...

Making me wonder where is Keegan --  he was super---    and somehow was involved with some study at Harvard two years ago .. well maybe that study is over and he's hanging around Rowley looking for a job hopefully .. he was a hard worker and fun .   just maybe goldie has that one lined up too !!      keagan... used to work here..... anybody know who or where he is???

If we do get these pups, they are just 12 weeks old/ slightly younger than our 15.. and all ready for the can feeding routine... probably on the nursery camera too !!

 

The email from Heidi about riz is really all I need for a dialyu doggie...

 

Riz was a pup that  the trainers Wanted to wash out  in 2019 as not service dog material. ---  I took her out training just to see what was going on ... and I found her wonderful... no problems/  it can happen that a specific dog and  specific trainer just don’t get along..... but I though she was great...   enter GOLDIE.....   just that day I had an application from a person who...

1.    Was looking for a replacement service dog – her’s had died

2.    Had had quarter horses in her life

3.    Had a sense of humor

4.    Was available immediately

5.    And was game to try what could be a disastger if I had mis judged RIZ..

6.  worked for the us dept of agriculture in washington  dc....... so if i screwed up it would be a big one.

 

So Heidi arrived within very few days I spent a few hours with her an RiZ they seem to get along fine and I warned her  of all the things that could go wrong or at least some of them .. and sent them on their way .  as part of her office file .. it was suggested that Heidi video tape RiZ doing the assistance dogs international public access test .. which to be honest I hadn't specifically done each of those chores .. so Heidi send a video which we still use now as a demonstration of a perfect service dog .. and Heidi in the last year has reported several spectacular things that ..riss  has done

the one before this story was RiZ getting Heidi down many flights of stairs into something like an earthquake center or bomb shelter or something in washingto n dc....I forget that part ..  but this story with her mother kinda takes the cake .

Tell Lassie she can go home....Riz is going to take over as hero dog! Yesterday, I was in my home office working when Riz started frantically barking at the window. Since she never barks, I jumped up to see what was wrong and looked out the window to see my mother laying in the snow. She had slipped on ice and fallen and couldn’t get back up. When I opened the door, Riz raced to her and kept nudging her until my mom grabbed her harness and used Riz and I as leverage to get up. We were able to get her in the house and thankfully nothing was broken, but I shudder at the thought of how long my mom may have lain out in the freezing cold had Riz not alerted me!

This is not something SDP trained her to do, but you did breed and train a thinking dog, which adverted a potential tragedy.  THANK YOU!

  by popular demand.....  i will try  at 10 am to sip my 3rd cuppa coffee

 in front of the fire while making a 4" monkey fist and trying 

 to teach malarky how to use the yuppy puppy himself-

- he just sits and waits for capricious to do it for him.

we have had so many monkey fist orders.....that i have the painful job of sititng in front of the fire and making them...tough  job !!

Trying to teach larky  is going to involve sitting with my hand on the bone which is the trigger and waiting for him to even get either his face or his foot anywheres near it at which point I will trip it ... so he eventually will associate getting close to that bone handle and realize that's what produces the food .. this is very like what they call "clicker training...."  except i don't have to buy ( or find) the clicker.

at the moment he only knows that capricious is what causes the food to come out so I will have to lock her away because she's super at it .. ----he just lets her ..

my added complication will be that Bentley figures that yuppy puppy gumball machine is his exclusive toy .. and he's been known to come by and push the handle a few times and not even bother to eat it and just glare at every other dog ..

so I will lock those two away and try with just mullarkey loose in the area ...

 

fizzle does not do it all that well .. she has noticed that if she quietly pushes the lever with her chin she gets one little bead of a treat and she has never figured out that she should bang that bowl harder she's very delicate so when she uses the yuppie she gets one tiny little half inch round treat at a time . ..you take Germany he will bang at the thing and get a bunch of food at a time.. it's a very well designed  interior .. that has lasted through 25 years of great Danes bang ing on it .

 

I've tried to buy another one because they still do make the yuppy puppy but the new version is all plastic and the angles are just a little bit different so that it doesn't deliver the treat as well .. this antique one shoot the treat out into the dog dish and it makes a loud noise .. somewhat similar to the one armed bandits in Las Vegas where the management can manage to make two quarters sound like you've hit the Jack pot .. it's the same training people or dogs .

 

Don't buy one till you check with me but I would love to find a second antique yuppie --- with the glass and metal .. don't don't send me anymore of the plastic ones because I have three other front portch   now .

 

I happen to like the way this yuppy puppy makes a dog think .. used to be .. every dog born here knew how to use one .. I've fallen away from that specific training ..

bending ain't all that easy but I will try today at about 10:00 o'clock .at least we may get a monkey fist out of it .

chef for seniors.....is a franchise and may be around????? it is chef day here where I have to let mike know what 3 meals we wouold like to have tomorros....he charges a standard fee. And adds on th shopping  receipt so that these meals  cost us  only slightly more than the usual sub sandwich or Chinese food. So he does the shopping for it.

 

 

now  For the odd information of the day .  long ago I read a book about  pres. Jimmy Carter and his introduction to the White House .. and all the background information about being president and living there .. I was astounded to know that they had to buy their own groceries unless it was some kind of state dinner with 100 people but normal supplies cereal and milk..... had to be purchased buy them by the Carters .

I just read an article about Barack Obama and his introduction to the White House and he was astounded to find that though a person was provided to keep his wardrobe straight so he looked perfect , that he was responsible for the orange juice and toilet paper used by his family .

With two ex presidents talking about personal purchasing Make me think it must be a real situation----- which then makes me wonder now .who's assigned a chore of running to the supermarket if  president trump  runs out of mayonnaise .. ?

I could do a whole sat night live on that one... and do they shop Costco????  Do they have a separate pantry for the president’s mayonase?

Dear Carlene,

Seagram is doing well and taking excellent care of me, as always — and she brings such joy to our lives! She looks like a puppy as she runs zoomies through the snow, the only snowfall that we have had in 2020! My husband goes out to run and play with her, and he seems to enjoy himself as much as she does. I certainly enjoy watching her run, more than I ever liked running myself! ;)

She makes it look so effortless as she glides through the snow, seeming to smile, and enjoying the speed...A couple of days ago, I caught my husband singing, “Dashing through the snow, on a one Dane open sleigh, o’er our yard she goes, zooming all the way...” Hahahaha— that was me laughing, not just the next words to the song.

Since it has been colder, I often stay inside as they play, and watch through the windows. When they come back in, after he wipes the snow from her paws, my husband says, “Go find Mommy.” She seeks me out, trotting toward me with her head held high, and each time as she wags then comes close for a lean & snuggle, I feel so blessed that I am hers.

Earlier this month, we returned to New York City because I went to the OR. She was a trooper during such a long and stressful trip! We had to be separated, of course. This is only the second day I have used my cane, since we were matched over 4 years ago — and what a reminder as to how much better I walk with her! All went well, and I had the same nurse who had cared for me when I went to the OR in Oct. As the nurse escorted me out, we could see Seagram through the glass doors. It was adorable, the way her ears perked up when she spotted me as well. The nurse said, “I’m not even a dog person, but she is so beautiful! I’m so happy to see her again!” After being reunited, we stayed for a few minutes to talk with the nurse about how Seagram helps me, and her education, as well as SDP, of course. The nurse was especially impressed that Seagram had learned how to stop a fall, and that she has “caught” me, preventing me from some serious falls. Usually I hand out Seagram’s business card, which includes information about the Farm and Explore cameras, but I had already given her one last time.

As we made our exit, we approached a security guard, who seemed especially excited to see Seagram (as far as I could tell, since she was wearing a mask). She soon said, “That’s the best thing I have seen all day!” So we stopped to chat briefly and I gave her one of Seagram’s business cards. It is wonderful that just seeing Seagram can bring joy to others, too.

The best part about the trip, aside from being reunited with Seagram, was watching her gleefully run though the yard upon our return home. She seemed to appreciate her zoomies all the more, after spending so much time in the car and at the hospital.

As always, thank you for this amazing partner! I am so grateful for all those efforts, big and small, from so many people, that lead to this wonderful gift.

My family and I used to ski.  I loved being out in the snow with the beautiful scenery and in nature.  Today Kringle and I experienced nature again by snow shoeing.  It was beautiful to be out there in the winter wonderland.  Kringle also enjoyed running along side of me and then running back.  Her eyes never leaving me to ensure my well being.  The best part was her sticking her whole head in the snow and then coming up with snow on her nose.  I am proud to say that I could do this independently with poles and huge shoes.  It was an awesome day with Kringle, nature, Brooke, and the great outdoors.  So happy to be alive.

 we don't have enough men volunteering to feed cookies to the puppies....  consequently  we have some  year old dogs who  worry about these people looking objects that are strange... and at a year old it takes alot of cookies to have them relax ..   like mcdonalds "happy meals"    get em young, train em early-

the early stage of puppy raising is perhaps it's most rewarding... and odiferous. not something  male people are inclined to find an acceptable scent.  like diaper changing.

the 15 pups are now into car riding 101... they all need to spend time in the car doing  basically... nothing... getting bored...  14 are doing well--- the problem one is of course , one i am working with.. malarky..

he was in the car with me when  a chicken got in fromt  so i put the brake on a bit quicker than  necessary and he fell onto the  floor-- he has no idea how that happened and is now  scared.

he is also very  close to too heavy  for me to lift  into my car.    he needs to spend time with his mommy in the back of my car while i sit around listening to audio books in snowstorms..

how one drives a car  with a dog as the passenger in the back, can be critical... too many jack rabbigt starts and stops and you have a problem of "i aint gittin in that fool thing." 

several times we have had service dogs leave here perfectly behaved at loading and all of a sudden... they don't.  every time, the recipient has foirgotten that quick stop which caused the problem... and in two cases ended up at the vet's who decided the dog.... being a great dane,.... must have bad hips.."wobblers"  $5000 xrays etc later   i made the recipient ride in the very back while i demo'd what  an unexpected quick stop is like  from the rear.... they changed driving habits and the dog's hips got better?????  whatever...

trains ,planes, and busses....  all may be different to you.. and certainly the noise and smell are different, but the dog does not realize there is no terra firma under that floor.  so aside from feeding treats as the plane goes up or down, just in  case the dogs have the same ear problems people have that chewing helps... there is no differnce, to the dog.  now if you basically fear flying,  yes.... fido will pick that up and also worry...

I HAVE ASKED THE QUESTION OF PEOPLE MANY TIMES: WHY DO THEY PAT DOGS ON THEIR HEAD?  HAVE THEY EVER NOTICED WHEN A DOG IS PATTED ON THE HEAD, IT REACTS BY FLINCHING, SQUEEZING ITS EYES SHUT, AND LOWERING ITS HEAD?  I ASK HUMANS HOW THEY WOULD LIKE TO BE PATTED ON THE HEAD EVERY TIME THEY ARE GREETED BY SOMEONE, BUT PEOPLE PERSIST IN GREETING DOGS THAT WAY ANYWAY.

Good Morning, 

I thought you all would like to hear this story be all her appointments. Pixie is just amazing I’m so blessed in so many ways. I’ve been falling a lot. I sure don’t let it stop me. I have a motto don’t quit. This one though as where Pixie helped me and it could have turned out bad but I alway think of the bright side of things. 

This girl is just absolutely amazing. There is one thing even on retirement the one thing they always say once a service dog only as a service dog. The night before last I want to take her out at 1:30 in the morning. She wanted me to go outside with her she likes me to be close to her, she doesn’t necessarily like the dark I color my chicken girl in the dark. 

Well I was taking a step up and of course I lost my balance as I do a lot. I was falling backwards going quick next thing I knew she was at my side catching my fall. Bracing tight of course she doesn’t wear a harness because I don’t want her feeling as if she’s working.  I am so blessed to have pixie right by my side and her quick thinking still always by my side. As I say we may work differently in her retirement but there is one thing you can never take away from her once a service dog they only stay with that they know just what to do. The things that you’re so grateful for. My girl is so amazing she makes me so proud each and every day. 

Thank you for training such loving amazing service dogs. They truly change our lives. There’s one thing I have learned. Pixie may be retired but she sure will not let me take a fall on her watch when we are alone. Our bond can never be broken it’s really a special bond.

who says dogs like to be4 banged in the head by stranfgers--- or nyone else for that matter...

'may i pat your dog?"   we get it all the time.... and often people get angry  when you say "no".......    so from the dog standpoint  getting banged in the head is something they are supposed to tolorate????

How would you Like to be trying to work and have somebody come in bang you in the top of the head four times it wouldn't take long for you to try and stop them and unfortunately the only thing dogs have to stop them with is growl starl and teeth in about that progression.

so when you have a well trained dog out there's nothing in the world that says you're supposed to allow the general public the Pat that dog and in my opinion I don't think you ought to let them .. because it could be a matter of time till the dog says I'm really kind of sick of this .. and at that point humans will decide the dog is wrong . so protect your dog .. many of you have heard these two stories before but it bears repeating .

 

the first great day that I purchased from the BMW kennel in roll Long Island was Tiffany .. the mother of the 8th but we eventually ended up going all over Boston with on that crazy bed $1000 a day .. crazy way to make a living however Tiffany was padded handled whatever you want to call it with hundreds of thousands of people the topsfield fairgrounds the Esplanade concert they chowderfest and harborfest and riverfest and all those other fests where we just set up and people would stream past the bed and talk about their dogs .. I had the eight dogs with me no leash no collars and usually two or three would be on the bed and the rest would hide if they wanted to like under the bed and I would watch for them to get tired of people and swap off dogs but Tiffany was the old reliable ..and then we were at the Prudential tower ..

It was the usual setup a few donkeys the dogs in the bed and 100 baby chickens .. it was crowded Tiffany was loose wandering around . and all of a sudden came to me growling and obviously upset and turned and looked at the little girl that was approaching her I grabbed tiffany's towels to hold her down while the kid came in I had no idea what's going on ..  but the kid patted the dog while I held on to her and she went away and Tiffany relaxed back to her usual self .. no big deal ??? well a year later the same place at the Pru the same hundreds of people and she had the same reaction when that one kid came along and what was the problem I do not know but she had a definite opinion about that kid .

 

many of you who are older in this crowd knew   Bailey the white dog -- Perfect dog perfect manners absolutely reliable she is the dog that's in the tree and we set up for many many photographs .. and she hated George Myers .. I don't think I ever took her to him for veterinary care .. I do remember back when she was of a size that I was carrying her I walked into his office and he said that's the “ugliest Great Dane puppy I have ever seen “ he may have been kidding I don't really know .. she turned out beautifully but any rate I don't see how the puppy could be could remember that but Bailey hated George I could tell if she was in the house and George drove up the driveway she wanted to kill him simply .....   one day a dog fest he said you watch I could win her over I'll give her a cookie .. and he held out the cookie and she with very stiff legs and me talking to her walked up and took that cookie and backed away and growled at him. I just had to be very careful when George was around because if she had been George somebody would have decided she was vicious or something that's the only person she did it with he was 1000% reliable with everybody else .

so there are times well it's up to you to protect your dog and allow them their opinion stop them before they get in trouble ..

 

To deal with the general public and animals and the relationship between the two is a dicey  experience. I don't know who decided people could do no wrong .

so with all your people with our dogs .. keep the people away from them ..  it is just plain  simpler that way .

 

Now back to trying to teach a dog to do anything meaningful ... as in walk quietly next to a person and help them up and down stairs ....  you cannot do that by holding the leash so tight that you're restricting them .  they must find out that walking next to you is the best thing to do even though the leash is hanging slightly loose . 

we had a problem with Henry who's a very long dog .. going up stairs and downstairs .. he could see no reason not to take two or three steps at a time ..

There is one line of training thought which would say block him from taking two steps at a time .. with either a physical barrier or tight leash .. I don't think so

I prefer to explain to the dog right at the bottom of the steps that we're going to go up these steps one at a time talking to him constantly and having him realized something strange is going on and he better think about it ..   in Henry's case he would do pretty well when are the first few steps either up or down but the ability had to start thinking of those two back legs he had way back there that had to catch up he got a little mixed up so it took a little bit of effort for us to work in the program Henry's back legs.. but last report I had he was doing pretty well and at least stopped  galloping up the stairs 

Henry is also an example of the fact that he has achieved boredom an awful lot of things and  is ready to think about work so he's coming along nicely .

 

Now if we just went  upstairs then  downstairs then upstairs and downstairs in the hotel it would not take long for Henry decide it's entirely too boring any rather do something else----- so you do have to partition the training session and something like stairs with going around this chairs in the bar they're coming back to the stairs or going and sitting down and getting up and come back to stairs -----it's even very difficult the climb go up a flight of stairs turn around at the top and come down again ...

the dogs are capable of deciding you're an idiot ..  so to prevent that from happening you have to go up the stairs and then go somewhere and then come down again ..takes a few extra minutes but respect the dog's intellectual capabilities .. especially if they're trying to decide whether you're  sane or not.   Go up the stairs and then go to the far end of some room sit down Pat the dog ask him to help you get up then go over and go down the stairs is a much better progression ..then going up the stairs and turning around and coming down ..

afterthought

if you are in some training class for which  you paid good money, and your "trainer" says   " now praise your dog"   whatever happened ....the praise is too late.... the effective  split second is gone....

fido  "come.----.. good  dog good dog--- sit.---. good dog good dog---"

 is an entirely different sequence than

fido  "come--- sit-- good dog good dog..."  

dogs in the learning process have a very  direct A  caused B..   maybe much later. they cn deal with compound concepts...... but keep it pure to start with....

and fido.." be a good dog"  should not be in your dogs vocabulary..

.because it mean s they are being bad... and all they hear is good dog/.. try just plain "knock it off !"

All good with Honey !

She’s eating better and absolutely loves the snow. We got about a foot this morning and she went right out running around in it.  Still a little skittish around males not sure what her previous experience was but we’re working on it.  Haven’t been out much but when we do everything seems to be good walking has slowed down and everything is going according to plan.

Was planning on coming back to the farm to bring the keychains but with the snow probably not going to make it this weekend either.

Will be there as soon as we can!

I said I would do training again so here we go

 for years as a kid----- along time ago I was obsessed with getting a dog to roll over and regardless of how many times I rolled that cocker spaniel over it never did learn ... then I got a poodle .. which was a much sillier dog and used to roll on her back just for fun ..and I found out if I quick got on the other side she could roll herself over and within a very few minutes she learned to roll over... because she did it !!  not me...

Case study two

in trying to teach the puppies to use the yuppy puppy ---which for you newcomers--- is basically a gumball machine with a bone handle and dog treats –

I cannot tell you how many times I have picked up their foot and put it on the handle with zero success .. if I keep my  hand by that handle and they get exasperated and finally hit my hand with their paw ...  and hit that handle at the same time making stuff come out ,,then basically they've learned it in five seconds.

very very many of these things have caused me to decide the best way for a dog to learn to do something is to use their own muscles ..  Which if you extrapolate that to the extreme ..  you ended up with young puppies and spoons of canned dog food as the initiation to the world of humans .

 

they love canned dog food ...we use purina pro plan because not only is it good food but it sticks to the spoon pretty well ...so if you open the canned dog food and tap the can with the spoon they'll come running ... so let's think of that from the very beginning you get your can of dog food and you get your spoon and you say puppy puppy puppies come on and then you open the can of dog food and pretty soon you have them coming to you before you get the can open  Just when you call puppy puppy puppy ... which down the road will be “ sizzle come...”  And you set the instinct at least  to come towards you .

 

Compare that concept with having a dog on long leash.. the dogs 20 feet away from you you say his name and come while he's sniffing the ground and he continues to sniff the ground 'cause that's what he wants to do and you give him a good pull with the leash to pull him to you ..

that dog is still thinking of the last sniff of the interesting smell he had and you interrupted his thought process which was sniffing the ground .. which if it doesn't make the dog dislike you .. the dog will at least think s he interrupted me ..  and as annoyed with having to go to you----     there is a  whole different atmosphere  .

..

There is I have to admit a teenage rebellion phase which they may go through which is a lot easier to deal with if they have a foundation a running toward ue so good things can happen ..

 

Now think—”
“fido get over here and get in this crate  I need to get out of here ,I am late for a dentist  appointmentand I don’t want you to eat the curtains when I am gone.”

And fido Is thinking...   “ anytime I get near her she sticks me in that box and I don't like it so I won't go near her until she catches me “

 

so even with young puppies you need an awful lot of come here something nice will happen and go away without sticking them in a car or a crate or anything else because their whole learning process goes directly from A to B and you can't slip anything in between ..

actually calling the dog to be fed it's dinner... have the dish of food ready. and when fido is  out of sight... call them for dinner  that is a great wsay to start...

and at that point do not do anything besides put the food in front of them....  because if you do the "sit there til i say you can eat."

'  ... is putting a big negative right after you called them......

besides running around in a nice warm car listening to cd   it's not a bad way to spend the morning

I know I was supposed to have a discussion about more training today but I really have to get out in the next 20 minutes and start plowing it looks like it's light and fluffy but the wind is blowing pretty good so I do want to stay ahead of it and make sure people can get in here at 7:00 o'clock they may not get out of here but ........ OK

 

the goal is to get it plowed all the way to the barn and /dumpster!!!!! and out to the street with room to park six or eight cars ..   Bud got me all organized last night with the car backed up to the garage with a plow pointing straight out and the tractor at the   front door  /  top of the Hill headed down the walk that'll give Me 2 good swipes to start with .. I really think the ploughing problem will be as the day wears on because it's supposed to snow the entire day .and we are supposed to have 18 inches .

for the first time in my life I had to consider the fact that if I got stuck out there I could not walk back to the house ---0mind you I wouldn't mind sitting in a nice warm car for an hour or so while people figured out how to Get Me Out of the car but not being able to go walk into a nice warm building there  did  cross my mind so I'm happy to wait until daylight today ..

 

last night's Mail call was hysterical ..

Janine has one donkey that she has taken into nursing homes and things that ordinarily comes upstairs very quickly ..and he started to come in the front door when the dogs spotted him and barked at which point he decided to go the other way so it took quite awhile to convince him to come in the door     a bucket of grain helped and he was very nice and polite standing there for a very long time and then he had to go to the bathroom === he tried to turn around and get out the front door but the door was shut ----I was at the business end the whole episode came out right up my feet and on my feet and my blue jeans in the wall or a few other things ..in dog language with a real pancake .. sounds absolutely terrible except horses/donkeys   eat only grain 

well this is a study that you won't find too many people will talk about . but manure  pile for the horses is a rather pleasant odor I think it doesn't bother me at all .. so the stench of this at my feet was no particular problem it just smelled like horses ..  now------ I had a pig once .. and for a very long time we fed it only grain and there was no smell to the pig there was really no  difference from the generic horse smell .. and then we opted to feed are leftover table scraps which contain meat and the stench was incredible  ----smelled like a pig ..

 so as I go out to plow . there's a good one for you to think about I suppose if I was a real scientist I would try putting a dog on a vegetarian diet and see if that cured that horrible doggy smell (that we don't have because we pick everything up for it quickly ).and as you sit there I drink your morning coffee you can extrapolate that idea many times over and then maybe tomorrow I'll get back to dog training.

Training 101...

Here’s a million dollars worth of puppy training.( or it does work with adult dogs too)

Fiirst you must establish communication   for that I always suggest that people watch that old movie miracle worker where Anne Sullivan finally breaks through to Helen Keller and Helen learns the one word “water “..  the idea that Helen finally realized there was logical communication she was brilliant ..

and I do find that's very much like what happens with our Danes.  There is a “water moment”—they learn to learn...

 

the path we take is at three or four weeks old when they start of solid food to start spoon feeding them canned dog food after the regular meal /...if they were starving which all puppies are,   ... you couldn't get their attention but after they've had their breakfast it is possible to open a can of dog food I get along handled ice tea spoon and hang on to it and give them a spoonful a wet food which they love .

the trick here is to hold the spoon slightly high so as they look up at it and get tired they sit down-----the minute their rear end hits the ground you put that spoonful of dog food right in their nose so that eventually in very short order you could have 10 puppies sitting all around you waiting for a next spoonful and they have realised that jumping around isn't going to help ....the second step with the canned food is to tap the CAD twice with your spoon so they begin to recognize the noise and realize that If they get near you and sit down quietly they will get food in their face..

 so you've started them thinking ,,,  Now if you say their name just before you put the food in their mouth you basically have taught them to come with their called.

so conceivably by the time they are seven weeks old do you have a puppy that's better trained the most people's dog  who have gone to dog training class for two years .

so moving on .. the next step is leash training ..

the biggest mistake here is to put the leash on and hang on because as the dog reacts to the restraint and backs up into it-------- that leaves you following/?chasing ?---- the dog backwards with your hands stuck out in the air while the dog is struggling with something it doesn't understand----- so as far as the dog concerned it looks like you're chasing it   and  you are the one causing the problem .. And some dogs will forever have a problem of a person approaching them with their hands stuck out ... which unfortunately everybody tells kids      is the correct way to approach a dog----- it's not ---  but any rate you can't train the public .... back to the dog  if you start the training with a leash by having the dogs rear end in a corner .. you could introduce the leash and take 20 minutes to kind of explain to the dog but when the leash tightens   He is to move toward you .

Having got this far the puppy is really doing things which it thinks is normal without you commanding them to do things ..... .what you're trying to do is that teach them to think and do what's reasonable .. they will go through a bit of a teenager irascibility is that a word ???..  but very shortly it is possible to have short sessions where you cause the dog to think .  We have an expression around here that you have to wander around in crowds or wherever enough to achieve boredom before you can try and teach the dog something .. you cannot teach a dog to paces himself next to your leg if he is getting all excited about traffic or the fact that somebody else is reading a newspaper in a chair not very far from him .------. they have to have seen all those things and got bored with them before you can then say OK now there's a perfect way to do this walking bit... “  most notably...  when I put that vest on you you are going to walk next to me without tightening the leash at all .   I listen to people all the time tell me that their dog is impossible"he pulls all the time every time we go for a walk .".that's because no one ever explained to him he   was  not supposed to do that .  Around here I don't like to ever see a tight leash .. if you've tightened it and strangling the dog-- not thinking..  shame on you ..  if the dog tightens it by pulling himself some other direction then shame on the dog and he needs correction there's no reason for at leash  to be tight with an educated dog --  just look out for the  absent minded human . ultimately we prefer to have no leash ..

 

It is really very simple--- if the dog pulls against the leash give it a  sincere pull backwards to land the dog back where you want him and then relax the tension quickly... he'll only do that two or three times before he's cured for life---    you have explained to him the jumping ahead and yanking on that thing is not a good idea .

------I say that's $1,000,000 bit of advice because that's really all Caesar ever does and he certainly made $1,000,000 on it –

I'm sure there's a lot goes on off camera ,,,  but every time he's dealing with a dog he talks about taking it for a walk and you watch that dog stays right next to him so something has happened to make that dog walk next to him and he does not tolerate the tight leash . That's his basic concept and he was doing fine when he just dealt with dogs when he got to analyzing people it got a little off base but his dog management if you go for a walk and that dog is not going to drag you around .

 

Another concept was taught to me by mary the donkey... Mary was perfectly behaved and would walk next to me with their head right near my right shoulder and she was absolutely lovely ....as long as I paid attention because if her head was 1/4 of an inch ahead of my shoulder,   she would turn right and be gone and all I could do was hang on to her lead rope it get dragged around..... and she knew  it .. If her head was in place , I had the leverage to stop and turn her to the left around me and have control .. but all she needed was a tiny little bit to whip me to the right .. very much the same thing is true with dogs you could have them come around you which turns them in front of you around and back and then in place on your right hand side -----but if they're ahead of you they see a squirrel on their left///. they're gone ..

 

201t de- tails--- like we use purina canned pro plan chicken and rice... for spoon training...

It is certainly a good food, but more important, it is the right consistency to stay on the spoon.  Doesn't sound like much but if you have a couple puppies in front of you and you have stuff on the spoon which has pieces slide off onto the floor then you may have one puppy paying attention to you and several other puppies sniffing around the floor at your feet ..which defeats the practical purpose .. when I start that maneuver I very often have a bath towel where the front end of these puppies will be and if I drop too much so that they're distracted by it then the game's over and I have to change the towel ..   you have to constantly think about what your puppy is thinking and doing ....

 plus you have to hang on to that damn spoon so  they don't  swallow it==== that would be very bad ---   the long handle helps

all that is true with adult dogs too... it just takes longer... they have more details in therir heads to unload....
