THESE  OLIVE PUPS HAVE  OUTGROWN THOSE CUTE LITTLE WATER DISHES AND NEED 2 BUCKETS.

CONSTRUCTION IS HAPPENING -- THANKS TO ROBBIE WHO IS HAVING A GRAND TIME SMASHING THE OLD.

 

GOOD THING I GOT THE BIG DUMPSTER--- IT IS 1/2 FULL AND WE HAVE NOT PUT THE NUT HOUSE IN IT YET-- ALL THOSE WET SOFA'S IN THE GREEN TRAILER GOT TRANSFERED.

 

unfortunately we can not put a cellar full of tom's old medical records in it-  we should be burning those.. or shredding

 

IT WAS AN EXCEEDINGLY EXCITING MORNING WITH TOO MANY DOGS LOOSE AT THE WRONG TIMES-  mY NERVES WERE SHOT BEFORE LUNCHTIME. 

as i try and have dogs loose and just hanging while i work outside   -- be super careful about loose dogs.

 

MY NERVOUS BREAKDOWN OF ToDAY ( IT IS EARLY YET)  THIS QUICKEN--- I HAVE CAUGHT ERRORS SEVERAL TIMES-- TODAY IT ADDRESSED ALL THE CHECKS WITH SOME OTHER ADDRESS--

ONE LOOK AT THAT PILE OF PLYWOOD WITH  NAILS POKING SKYWARD MADE ME CALL THE WASTE MANAGEMENT DUMPSTER COMPANY WITH A DISCUSSION ABOUT SMALL MEDIUM LARGE. ----WHEN SHE GOT TO "I'LL CHARGE YOUU THE SMALL RATE IF YOU TAKE A LARGE ONE"  I TOOK IT-- SOUNDED LIKE SHE HAD MORE LARGE THAN SMALL ONES.

 

CAN WE MAKE AN ECONOMIC DISCOVERY ABOUT THAT??  MORE PEOPLE ARE RENTING SMALL ONES TO CLEAN OUT AND MOVE THAN NEEDING A BIG ONE FOR BUILDING  CONSTRUCTION ????

A GREAT SIT DOWN PROJECT  - WE NEED TO MASS PRODUCE THE PROJECT---  PUT THE LITTER OF 9 IN THE V PEN --- MAYBE SET UP THE PLAYPEN IN THE T TENT TO GET THEM CONCENTRATING ON THE CAN OF FOOD 2 AT A TIME.  OTHERWISE TRAVEL TIME TO AND FROM THE HOUSE WE WOULD NEVER GET IT DONE.

 

ONCE THEY KNOW THEIR NAMES- AND COME WHEN CALLED THEY ARE BETTER TRAINED THAN 83% OF THE REGULAR HOUSEHOLD DOGS.

what a way to start a Sunday morning besides the discussion of the control condition and consistancy of poo. 

 this service dog bit may be very poetic--- but much more time is spent dealing with poo production than training... ADI never mentions that.

 

THE CALL IS OUT FOR NEWSPAPERS---

 

NOT JUST RANDOM,,, IT REALLY HELPS IF YOU Eliminate the slipperies ( magazine/ad sections )

 

and if you cAN REALLY BE KIND ENOUGH TO PREPACK IT FOR IMMEDIATE USE----..   IT HELPS TO ELIMINATE THE THICK WADS AND  HAVE A "GRABBABLE UNIT" OF 4 TO 6 PAGES.

THEY NEED TO GET OUT IN THE SUNSHINE-- probably the grannie pen right outside the t-tent.

 

THERE IS A PEQUILIr odor to wet newspapers even if it is just water

hillary and molly did yoemans service yesterday-  and on top of everything else--- she did mop/vac the "area"  that used to be living room/office/kitchen-- and is now covered with a moppable mess daily

 

i could rant about mops--- and how "mop-up" is a misnomer-- unless you  mop---vac and rinse----, they are only a "mop-smear".

 

which brings me to my obsession with the purchase of wet/vacs

i am to vacuum cleaners what imanda whoever is to shoes

 

costco had a neat stainless steel small roll around cheerful looking wet/vac for $30

which i could not resist. and if you forget the 12 inch  wide pickup tool with it's fancy floor/rug switch-- and go straight for the down and dirty 4"wide  tool--- it reallly works --picking up and hiding the mess in the pretty stainless steel tank.

 

must not forget it is there !!.

puppy training wise--here is another wild -perhaps ridiculous theory-

 

these pups have to be one of the messiest -- often getting only their front feet off the fluffy bed  

the males are slightly better only because their plumbing is angled differently-

so i watch  ---  and i wonder---

is this bunch  poorly trained because at a critical point in their lives mommy got mastitis and had to be removed ?-- so they no longer had her cold nose poking them as they tried to empty whatever -  maybe she was not only cleaning up after them  but steering them--- eventually they learned to get far from her for a moment of quiet relif.

 

i wonder how the mythbusters would test that one.

the bigger pups ( olives bunch) need to have that feeder updated with a step- so they can eat on their hind legs-- one dish to a dog.

there is a 6 holer on the deck now--- and i think a 3 holer is  around somewhere ??? near the dchickens??? at any trae we need it moved to the deck and a step added-

we hav plenty of lumber compliments of kristens builder as he sorts out the crooked boards.

 

crooked lumber  is a blessing around here-  it is a marvelous excuse for things that don't quite fit

thanks to the nearby tree's roots  one of them is barely down a foot-- so somewhere in my interior design i will have to  tie that to the 2x6' s of the floor in a triangle and let the building hold it up...   the rest are down 3'  so it should work.

 

reason #693 why i do not get on well with the building inspector.  i used that solution  in building the training room 15 years ago and it is still standing.

janine's tenant who had a dog is moving out-- so she needs a dog-

she lives a a pretty random existance- but whatever-- she turns out a welll trained happy  dog-- she basically trained bailey.  she does not micromanage a dog- probbly because she can't ever find a leash and collar.

 

she is thinking... pistol or jasper-

pistol would be great because janine lives 1 block off 95 ---- alice could  pick her for playtime variety-- and she would be close enough for me to "use" her in therapy calls.

jasper is a great dog tooo

but he would be best placed with noel-- and not too far away either.

8pm  midnight and 4:45 feedings--- not too bad

 

and chaos talks -- when the kids need feeding --- she talks- and keeps after me it li get up and feed.by the tine they are fed/cleaned and asleep--- she is sleeping also-- so it is just "get up and feed now".

 

her temp 4:00 was 101.9

 

and being light on the  sleep-- i found a second thermometer-- carefully  labeled it "dog-mouth"  and found the temp in those jowls is 99.9 when her rectal was 101.9

 

this is a must do study

 

putting that thermometer way back in the depths of those jowls is a lot more dignified.

 

 

we need a chart--- we have enough dogs--- we need the normal difference between the "areas"

thank heavens for jodi's cut and paste--- it has been a long night--- and an early morning****

 

  I just caught up on the Daily Doggies.  Rain, you have rain???  What is that?  And mosquitoes, I haven't seen one in months.  Usually this time of year they are everywhere.
   As we go to the Dean Ranch each week we have watched the small stock pond dry up completely.  It looks like a miniature Grand Canyon is developing.  Interesting to watch because it shows how things like giant crevices develop but so very sad to watch because there are cows and the dogs that need the water, not to mention the fire danger that is ever present.  The large stock pond in the back is shrinking inches everyday, but it is still deep enough for the dogs to have a good time.  Stormy aka Clipper has developed a routine of getting in the water, sinking in the mud and allowing herself to sink up to her neck.  I was worried at first that she would get stuck in the mud, but when she is done soaking in the cool mud and water, she jumps out and runs over to Martha and me.  She seems to enjoy smearing us with the mud that clings to her.  Cinder, more lady like, goes in the pond and sinks but will not allow the mud or water to go farther than her belly.  When the playing in the pond is all done, we go back to the house and rinse the dogs off before I put them in the the car to travel home.  I have decided if I don't really scrub the mud off of Stormy's butt, it will dry and she might not be able to poop though it.  It seems to dry like cement.
   A Great Dane observation:  When you say you have a conversation with one of your Danes, I understand completely.  Understanding and remembering to use it are two different things.  I have been politely asking Stormy to close the door when she comes in the house.  A conversation about how it costs a lot of money to air condition the house when the temperatures are 110 degrees daily has ensued.  She is closing the door more quickly now and only has to be told, "Stormy, would you please close the door?  It is costing a lot of money when we are air conditioning the outside."  She looks as if she knows exactly what I am saying.  The door closes.  I thank her.  Happiness prevails.  This is so much better than issuing the command, "Close it!" just to have the command ignored or even worse watching that slow Great Dane reaction -- first lean on the door, then push it a little.  See just how slow you can close it.  All the time knowing Stormy is thinking, "Am I beating my record for closing the door slower than I have ever done it before?"  This can irritate the living heck out of me.
   Then there is the husband aspect.  He insists on saying, "Close the door. Push it. Close it," over and over.  It drives me nuts.  I have just discovered after almost twenty-five years of living with this man that telling him how to do something doesn't work.  I haven't said a word to him about the secret of the conversations with Danes.  The past several days and maybe even a week he has been asking her politely to please close the door.  She does it.  He thanks her.  And everyone is happy.  Why does it take twenty-five years -- and learning men don't like to be told what to do many times over during those years -- to finally realize that it doesn't work to tell him what to do?  Let him observe.  Don't nag.  And surprise, he does what I want.
   Danes need a conversation.  Men would rather you were quiet.  Learning all these things over and over is giving me a headache.  Maybe this time I will remember the lesson.
   I am anxiously awaiting my trip to SDP.  I will arrive November 2 thanks to Southwest Airlines birthday sale.  I hope everyone who knew Stormy, aka Clipper will be able to see her again.  She is such a cute girl.
   A miracle happened today with Stormy.  I had to print several things from my laptop.  The printer is in another room.  Usually Cinder follows me everywhere.  Cinder stayed in her bed.  Stormy walked with me every single trip to the printer.  Because I was having printer problems, this meant going to the laptop, hitting print, going to the printer, checking for the document over and over.  Stormy never missed a beat.  She was with me every step of the way.
   Cinder hasn't wanted to go out with me anymore for quite awhile.  I have been worried because Stormy just didn't seem to understand her job.  I didn't trust her to take care of me.  I decided last Friday she had to know what to do because I had two very important meetings this week.  I knew Cinder wouldn't go with me.  I had to trust Stormy.  I took her someplace every day this week.  Today she became the dog I should have known she would be.
   Trusting the dog to take care of you is a big step.  When you realize you have crossed this threshold, you have your miracle.
   It has been an amazing week of discoveries about myself.  It is funny how it was so easy to blame my husband, Patrick and Stormy when the real problem was me.  I guess no matter how old you get and how much you learn, you have to get a little reminder lesson from time to time.

 WE-- AS IN THE SDP VOLUNTEERS WHO SIT AROUND AND DRINK COFFEE---  DID DREAM UP THE ENTIRE THING SEVERAL YEARS AGO--

I SUGGESTED WE  PROMOTE THE "PACKAGE" TO OTHER CHARITIES--- AND PROBABLY STILL COULD-- BUT WE JUST NEVER GOT ROUND TO IT.

YOU NEED A TABLECLOTH FOR TRACTION.

 

I HAVE BEEN CONCERNED THAT  THEIR HEADS ARE TOO LARGE---THAT MEANS - USUALLY- THEY NEED MORE GROCERIES-- NOW THAT THEY ARE OFF CHAOS AND ONTO PUPPY FOOD AND  ONE A DAY DOG VITAMINS- THEY SHOULD BULK UP

 

ANYONE WITH NOTHING TO DO--- COULD WEIGH AND RECORD THEIR WEIGHTS WITH DATE AND TIME--

WE HAVE TO STAY ON TOP OF THAT --- THAT COULD BE A LORI SPECIALITY--- IT IS HER SCALE...

 

ALSO--- WORMING WILL HELP-

 

ALL PUPS  HAVE WORMS---- JUST ONE OF THOSE WIERD FACTS OF CANINE REPRODUCTION.

THIS DOES NOT TAKE THE FANCY WORMER WHICH IS FOR EXOTIC TYPE WORMS= THIS IS THE $2 A GALLON ROUND WORMER..

 WELL........ IT IS NOT LIKE THE $682  BOTTLE OF "ALL WORMER"

K3 WAS HELPING WITH THE NUT HOUSE "REMODELING" AND I EXPLAINED MY DELICATE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE IPSWICH BUILDING INSPECTOR-  

 WHEN I WOULD NOT PICK HIS CONTRACTOR TO REBUILD THE ARENA HE SAID " YOU ARE  OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE YOU ARE ONLY A WOMAN"

 

K3 HAD A SIMILAR  SITUATION IN THE MILATARY WHEN HER COMMANDER SAID " I DON'T EXPECT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO FINISH THE RIGORS OF TRAINING"

AND SHE RETURNED WITH ALL THOSE COLORED PINS THEY WEAR WHEN THEY FINISH  TOP OF THEIR GROUP.

 

THEN I COUNTED THE NUMBER OF TINY  98 POUND VOLUNTEERS AROUND HERE WHO HAVE MORE STREGNTH AND STAMINA THAN MOST 200 POUND MEN I HAVE MET. 

 K3 BEING ONE OF THEM---   AND HILLARY--AND EARLENE---

 

THIS "ONLY A WOMAN " CONCEPT IS NOT DEAD- BUT THANKFULLY IS BEING SHOT DOWN BY THE YOUNGER GENERATION.

THE BUD2 AND INDY REPORT

Indy and I ventured in to the JP VA Wednesday for a bone scan. Indy was ok with arriving and going in. A bit unsure about the lab but she was ok enough to back up for me and lay down long enough for us to escape. The scan itself she was less happy about, first she wanted to be with me but eventual accepted sitting on Stephs lap so long as the machine stayed over by me. After the scan she was more than happy to show the way out. She was very brave considering what it all must have looked like to her. So today we took it easy and went for a short walk on a rail trail where others ride bikes walk and walk dogs . She really enjoyed sniffing about.

 The purpose of my email is to see if there is any interest on your part to allow the seniors from Hamilton and Wenham help socialize your dogs and/or puppies.

 

If there is interest, I was wondering if on Monday's you could come to the Hamilton Council on Aging (Bay Rd/1A) for about an hour and allow seniors to be a part of your project.  I would like to see if it might be possible to bring seniors to you, let's say perhaps on Monday's to help socialize the puppies.

2 big projects of yesterday-- megan got barney safely to keith's in atlanta - she kept us informed about her progress with emailing photo's on the plane of barney  squeezed between the seat .. keith said the dogs ---- hudson and barney--- were doing fine and he would call later today-- megan is to come back this morning..

made easier because megan's mom worked on that atlanta plane yesterday

made possible by a whole bunch of people including gay and jerry who managed to get that wonderful COA van donated  from the town of wenham --- without it... the day might not even have happened.

 

Dear Friends,

As a patient advisory board member and volunteer at Spaulding North Shore I would like to extend a very heart felt THANK YOU to all the volunteers, dog handlers, staff, relatives and friends, dogs and puppies who made today such a huge success!

The smiles were plentiful on all 5 floors as the dogs toured the hospital

complete with puppies in a baby carriage!

Patients and staff alike were treated to the nicest bunch of very well behaved Great Danes and puppies! My telephone rang all afternoon from people from Spaulding thanking me....asking when could we could return...how the dogs made their day....etc., etc!  

It was truly a GREAT day for some patients that got to put a puppy to sleep on their lap, receive a puppy kiss or get to hug or pose for a picture with the GREAT Danes~

So amazing is the spirit of a dog that gets you back to a better place, brings a little sunshine, or leads one to have hope. 

Special thanks to Carlene White founder, director and trainer of the Service Dog Project in Ipswich, MA.....all of us have a much better understanding of Great Danes because of the knowledge you share with the community around you. 

Again, I offer my sincere appreciation to all of you that volunteered your time and energy today! You are my unsung heroes that make life a little easier and nicer!

next large report  is health--

 

chaos spiked a temp yesterday  105++ - all indications - mastitis-

pups being over 3 weeks old--george suggested we "pull the pups"

 

well.... they are on nearly solid food- ground in blender and soaked... and they must have water dishes--- and understand they are for drinking--- not swimming... so today we need  casual puppy watchers to do a list of who has learned to drink water  to be sure they all understand.

 

it is about now you have to hope the dog food people have the formula correct- as they will be on food alone.

 

because of that  concern--- i think we should add some purina proplan puppy food to the kirkland-  much as i get annoyed with purina for not giving us any break in the price...  they are a big outfit -and make all grades of food- lots of research- and if a better food could be made for dogs- i am sure they would make it---AND CHARGE A FORTUNE FOR IT TOO.;  the low end of their price scale is purina dog chow--- and i found the danes did not do well on it-- but the higher priced purina pro plan  seemed to produce good results.

 

i think we should cut the goats milk too--

 

the 7 pups should do fine-- pet tab vitamin and worm-- but gurgle is already challanged... often throwing up  and sneezing food out his nose.

 

i do not understand-- he can not be throwing up all his food- because he manages "generous" sized piles of stool.

 

so stepping back to smaller more often snacks for him.... as long as he does not aspirate and get pnemonnnnia- we will go on...

thanks to lori who managed  chaos and the pups while i got a running start on the overnight- i don't know when she left but i had a good snooze and then fed  at 10-- 2-- and 5- and they slept in a pile .  so it was a relatively painless night for me.  chaos slept with me in the tv room-- door shut

 

chaos temp is down to 102.6  but those booooobs are huge and painful looking.  the concept of "expressin g some of th e milk " was not a popular project- she offered to bite me-- so i quit.

 

the re-design of the fluffy bed--- and newspaper rest room facilities must be done today

 

she is on 2 antibiotics  and is eating and drinking-- other than being miserable - she is doing ok.... and will readily step away from the pups when i ask her to.

the chicken sh#t bingo has started well-- we have enough to pay the prize money now ---- $500

so everything from here on is puppy food !!!!

chaos pups win the prize for noise makers

now that i am up--- they are only snoring  --

 but they spent the night on bark and growl practice---- with the occasional wail of "that hurts"  which gets me right out of bed to find one has another's ear-- or private part--- as often happens with this age group.

 

gurgle report- colleen fed last night and reported he snorted a sizable quantity of white--- presumably milk-- which must have been from nursing-- because i had fed him 2 tablespoons of puppy food  ( brown) 

since the snort was white... logic... etc...

so in an effort to give him enough to grow on...  i fed just him at 9...  2:30...  and then 5:30   just a bit-- ground up with goats milk--- lap out of bowl---   and it seems to have stayed down

careful inspection of the "linens" in the pen indicate that any brown marks were made by food already run thru the processing puppy gut  units 

 

i wish i had enough nerve to take him off mom's milk-- but since he does not know about water drinking, i am afraid the fluid management is beyond me.

for political and possibly legal reasons i did not put on the memsaic wall the fact that the bingo prize was $500.

i think it is better odds than the mass lottery--- can someone verify that??  one chance in 420 of winning is far better i think  ----- somebody check the back of one of those keno cards for the odds...

 

and i really want to run one a month... hopefully our bunch of daily doggers-- and their friends-- will buy a brick on our wall instead of a couple scratch tickets.

 

i will call the kayem hot dog people-- they have been very nice to give us hot dogs in the past-- so on the day of the sh#tting we can give the SUNDAY stewers a hot dog and ear of corn for their purchase of a "brick" on our wall.... as we sit around watching the hens "work"  at picking the winner.

another loop--- megan's mother  works for ?delta?-- atlanta IS THIER HUB-- AND MEGAN'S MOM WILL BE ON A FLIGHT TODAY AND CAN SHUFFLE MEGAN AND BARNEY AROUND IF POSSIBLE  TO FIND AN EXTRA INCH OR TWO

MEGAN WILL STAY OVER WITH KEITH AND HATTIE (AND HUDSON) ---COMING BACK STANDBY TOMORROW.

 

KEITH  MUST BE SUPER CAREFUL TO GIVE HUDSON EXTRA ATTENTION WITH A NEW DOG IN THE HOUSE.  HUDSON IS SOOOOO ATTACHED-- YOU DO NOT WANT TO UPSET THAT WITH ANY JEALOSY  AND THE FIRST 5 MINUTES OF RE-ASSURING HUDSON WILL BE CRITICAL.

MEANWHILE I DID GEORGE'S VET HOSPITAL'S COSTCO SHOPPING.

 

CALL CAME FROM MEGAN-- SHE WAS IN CENTRAL SQUARE-  BUT SHE DID NOT KNOW IF IT WAS CAMBRIDGE OR LYNN'S CENTRAL SQUARE.

IT DIDN'T REALLY MATTER BECAUSE SHE TALKED THE BUS DRIVER INTO CARRYING HER BACK TO THE SHOPPING CENTER FREE OF CHARGE--

THEY WERE AFRAID TO GET OFF IN CENTRAL SQUARE FOR FEAR THE DOGS MIGHT NOT GET BACK ON

 

BUT MEGAN CAN DEAL WITH THAT ON HER OWN TODAY...

 THE HAUL AND DRAGGERS OF THE DAY WILL  BE LORI  ANNE  POLLY..ME-- THEN ADD HILLARY WHO WILL SWAP DRIVING TOM WITH BOB-- SHE WILL BE OUR PUPPY CHASER IF THEY GET LOOSE... WHICH MIGHT BE FUN.

 THERESA WILL BE HERE TO SIT WITH PUPS-- THO THEY MIGHT BE FINE ALONE- WE CAN NOT KEEP UP THE 24 HOUR SURVEILENCE---HAVE TO RISK IT SOMETIME.

 

PISTOL CAN GO--  THEN A CARRIAGE WITH 2 OF THE OLIVE PUPS-- MAYBE PI- AND MAYBE TUCKER----BAILEY WITH SORE FOOT WILL HAVE TO STAY IN THE LOBBY WITH BOB AND TOM.

BUT HER ATTENDENCE WAS SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED... SHE CAN NOT WALK FAR AND BE COMFORTABLE

 

BAILEY MANAGEMENT WILL BE TO CARRY HER IN THE GOLF CART TO THE GRASSY AREAS WHERE SHE CAN EXERCISE WITHOUT HURTING THAT FOOT.

 

THE FOOT HAS NO "PAD"- JUST SOFT PINK SKIN-- NOT TOUGH ENOUGH.

GEORGE IS GUESSING CURES--- AND WE ARE ON IT.

idiot problem of the day...

here i have a chance to solve the worlds mosquito problem-- and my poor memory has done me in.

 

fact--

1. this house has a few- but i would  not say "is loaded with" mosquitos.

2. i often eat supper etc out of a cup in my chair- and set the cups on the bookcase to eventually get to the dishwasher.

 

3.  this morning.. lightly floating in a cup of yellow airy foam were 12 nearly dead mosquitos

4.  i can not remember what was in that cup that would foam up with a yeasty smell..  but whatever it was it pulled in most of the mosquitos in the house....  well, 12 is a lot in one cup

 

in this house,   cups of foaming/ fermenting  substances is not totally unusual--- but this looked fairly current...

if i could only remember...

Sorry i have not been in touch for a while, but as Gwen had mentioned we have had a lot of work to do at the house landscaping and putting up fences etc.. i don't need to tell you there are not enough hours, anywho we have got most of it done and after this Weekend i should be pretty much caught up and would love to start helping out again we will come up for the Stew on Sunday 28th, i have been following the Daily Doggies and the hectic time you have been having with all the puppies, and looking at Camera marks Tabloos they are all awesome looking. I can't believe the size of Pi now she looks so big. I will be free also on some Mondays to help you shuffle Puppies around or whatever is needed let me know.
