 WOOOWOOWOOOOOO

I just heard from the vet. Stowe is doing remarkably well. The swelling on her 2 front feet has gone down they did a Eco cardiogram today and found that 1 of the lesions on her heart valve is gone. They now just have to make sure it didn't go elsewhere in her body.

 All her vitals are good. They didn't get any results from the urine culture. It didn't grow the bacteria they were hoping that they could then test. They are thinking it was because she was on an antibiotic prior to doing the culture which prohibited the bacteria to grow. 

 She did eat and drink on her own today. They are looking to stop fluids tomorrow as long as she is still drinking on her own. Her blood results came back her protein levels are still low but if she is eating she will be producing her own protein which will raise the levels

I will discuss in the morning with the same doctor whether or not we can visit stow tomorrow. She did explain to me that it is really hard with the vet techs where so many people want to see their pets.

Tomorrow they will be looking at putting her on oral medication in lieu of the interveneous ones she is taking. They are also changing one of the antibiotics. With that being said, there is a possibility that she will be coming home on Thursday.

Let's keep our fingers crossed!!!

PUPS ARE DOING WELL.... I DID GET A HEADS UP   .. CAPREE.. IS ONE OF THOSE PUPS WHO SITS BACK AND STUDIES THINGS..  RIGHT !  I DO LIKE THAT... EXCEPT SHE IS THE LIGHTEST..IN WEIGHT????????  ONE PUP IS 10 POUNDS HEAVIER THAN SHE IS..     TIME TO WATCH THE FEEDING MORE CAREFULLY.. WHICH I DID YESTERDAY....     ONE PUP PER BOWL IS TOUGH WITH 15 PUPS...    WE NEED TO RE THINK SOMETHING.

ONE PER BOWL    NO BOWL SWAPPING !!      MAYBE THE  FEEDERS AT THE HOUSE ARE TOO DIFFICULT  3 X 3 FACING EACH OTHER ...  THE 6 IN A LINE IS BETTER---

I posted the picture and note below to Facebook, but wanted to make sure you got it too...thank you for the wonderful gift of Riz!

Today is Riz’s 3rd Birthday. This is one of my favorite pictures because I see so many things when I look at it.  I see the early puppy training she received that taught her not to be food aggressive, I see the result of the many trainers and volunteers who poured their love into creating such a sweet natured dog...and especially Jeri Ray who put her life on hold to stay when they were born, and Grace Elzinga who so lovingly told her goodby with a blanket when she left puppyhood behind to become a working dog. In little Talia taking on the big dog to get the bone, I see Carlene with her vision taking on organizations, challenges, and circumstances to fight for a vision and  of the CPs who have given gifts both large and small to keep SDP going.....without that will to take on the seemingly impossible, I wouldn’t have Riz. Finally, I see a challenge for myself to continue to take on my own life challenges, because I have the perfect partner with which to “walk on”.

Thank you to all that have impacted my life so greatly by creating Riz into the wonderful Service Dog she is!

ALOT OF DOGS BEHAVE BETTER WITH ME...  BUT .... A WOMAN WANDERED INTO SDP   WHO HAD BEEN A QUARTERHORSE PERSON-- AND WE HAD ALOT IN COMMON... INCLUDING .. WILLING TO GAMBLE--  SO I GAVE RIZ TO HER..   FUNNY  NEXT PART..... THE OTHER TRAINERS  ASKED HEIDI TO SEND A VIDEO OF RIZ WORKING THRU THE ADI PUBLIC ACCESS TEST..  WHICH HEIDI  DID... PERFECTLY...(  THANKFULLY -- I DID STICK MY NECK OUT-- )

LESSON HERE  IS...   SOMETIMES A BAD  REPUTATION IS THE RESULT OF JUST BAD CHEMISTRY. ... GIVE THE DOG TO A DIFFERENT TRAINER  HAS MEANT FEWER PERFECT PETS BEING WASHED OUT OF THE PROGRAM...

No change over night.  She was not interested in the buffet of food offered to her during the night.   She is tolerating the feeding through the nose.  

She was comfortable through the night due to the injectable pain meds.

I believe I have convinced them to allow Linda K to do an outside visit with Stowe soon.  Will coordinate with the panel of drs. assigned to Stowe this afternoon.

our 15 pups doing really well with judy and naNNY PAM 'S HANDLING... THEY ALMOST ALL FOLLOW-- AND ARE MANAGABLE BETTER THAN IN YEARS.  YOU CAN NOT SKIP BASIC TRAINING... WHICH  I LET SLIDE BADLY--- AND TEH TRAINERS THEN JUST LET IT GO.. AS EASIER TO FORGET... JUST LIKE Rat poison would be easier to eliminate rats in the barn,... the ultimaqte result is  far worse.

2020 10 6

All this puppy manageing happens sometime between 11:00 and 12:00 if the weather is at all decent we take him down put him on puppy he'll let him run around which is awfully cute keep in mind a month from now is not going to be as cute .. we let him run and then encourage them to go in kennel 10 but since there's so many of them we have opened the door between 9:00 and 10:00 so they have more challenge room. I have not open the ramp up to that loften 9 but I think I may do that today the loft in nine is basically a four by 8 sheet of plywood about 42 inches off the ground and a lovely place to take a nap if you are puppy or anybody else for that matter the sides of the ramp R well fenced off I believe I have to check on that .  I don't think they could fall off that loft . and I think the ramp is wide enough so if they get in an argument with each other with one up and one down I think they could pass each other .you can see all that on that barn camera I don't know the name of it it's the one with the thermometer in it I think .

 

I remember conversation I had by email ---actually by translated email --with a German breeder who said she only lets her puppies exercise 10 minutes a day on a leash at a walk …I just do not understand that one …when you look at how much fun ours have running up and down puppy Hill and don't seem to have any physical problem with it .. the pups are so darn rough with each other that I figure is the same as having an extensive veterinary physical exam if they can survive puppy Hill they're fine .

That concept was explained to me also by someone in adi  about how you mustn't make a dog work until they were at least 18 months old .

I think that comes from the thoroughbred racing horse racing .. where you can't run a 2 year old racehorse until the X Rays prove his growth plates are closed or something like that which happens at about 2years old .

I watch our dogs run up and down that Hill and play and if anything was wrong with them I think it would show up . and I am lifetime 450 Dane puppies … and hopefully counting .. although we don't have any females in heat just now .

 

I have tried to figure out how to get the puppies into the indoor arena , which might be nice in the coming weather but I don't think they would willingly go past the other kennels where the other dogs would bark at them and scare them ..

maybe if I work on that arena door way to the left of the camera I could get them from the driveway to puppy Hill till that door and then you could watch them inside for awhile .

that maybe should be my chore of the day

 

just after I get someone else to put my toolbox back on my golf cart .. darn things heavy but it carries an awful lot of what I need on a daily basis including duct tape

now it's about the whole on the shoulders of the blonde draft horse whose name I think is beatrous beatrous well be for short she has an incredible haul about an inch in diameter and almost as deep keeping the flies off in this weather is a huge problem but Janine has filled the hole with a product called SWAT which is supposed to keep the flies off but that shoulder is a mess so she has the whole field a lot of gauze pads and that's what looks like a strap around the horse is actually duct tape

I just checked the camera and the duct tape is still on so hopefully the hlole is still covered it does look funny but you don't want flies laying eggs in that hole you end up with maggots .may have already happened to her .. however it's cleaned now.

Hi Carlene! We are sitting here watching dogfest thinking back on all the adventures with sdp we have been lucky enough to experience. My very first trip on a sunday stew listening to your stories all the way through to today as we are missing people and a place that has come to mean so much more than anyone outside the sdp community could understand. The last 8 years have brought so much more than a dog into my life but rather an extended family and the best aunties a dog could wish for always looking out for him. We can’t wait until next year when we can hopefully all join back up and celebrate life and sdp all together again. Thank you for dreaming up this program and changing the paths of so many lives in the process.  

OCT 5 2020

Vet called at 5:08

Not much change 

They tried taking her off the injectable antibiotic (doxicycline) medication which did not go well.  

They are trying her on an appetite stimulate  and she did take and eat a piece of chicken for them (horray!)

Kidneys are still looking good with no adverse effects from the antibiotics. 

Vitals look good

Still some fluid in chest, around heart and lungs

She is no longer on the heart monitor whereas it has been functioning better.

Her energy appeared to be down a bit today but nothing dramatic.  They did get her up (she was reluctant) and did walk around the entire building, inside and out.

Pending tests:

Should have the urine culture back tomorrow. 

Blood culture takes 1 week, so it should be Friday 

Infectious disease culture (flea and tick bourne) takes 7 to 10 days...so this Friday or next Monday.

Note:  financially, we have reached our deposit amount and will need to make another deposit tomorrow.

(The injectable doxi is $250 a dose x 2 doses a day)

The 15 puppies are doing beautifully we struggled yesterday to split them between puppy Hill camera and the used car lot interesting Lee they all seem to recognize that somebody was missing from the group so there was a lot of complaining….I couldn't really tell who they were complaining about but because we didn't we didn't split them by their litter but rather the first available ..  and they did well following either Judy or Pam getting them transported to and from the barn somebody did get a blurry photograph of the barreling down the driveway .

it's an art puppy management .. once you start out with a group you have to go forward dogs follow they don't necessarily lead so the puppies will come along behind you and you have to rest assured if you have a straggler that another volunteer will keep track of that puppy you cannot turn around and try and get that one in the group … you also can't even turn around to look at them for fear your trip on somebody so once you start out can a dog food and a spoon for noise you're gonna jog at a good clip until you get into the puppy Hill fence or on the way back into the front door of the house and run on back to the condo area .it's working .

a great deal of time was spent by our smaller volunteers crawling in and out the little hole in kendleton trying to persuade them to go in there until they recognize the fact that it's warm in there and their water is in there then they really have to come up to the condo area for overnight .. there's a lot of dogs there …We're talking 500 pounds of dog with the 15 of them ,

 

There are a few pops that are showing a distinct personality ..  long ago my father who was the one to tell me to pick the puppy whose legs went straight backwards .. also said that normal people would pick a puppy that was jumping up and down at a fence saying take me take me ..but that I should constantly consider wonders sat back Anne analyzed the situation . we certainly have one of those in Capri . she doesn't rush into anything but when she gets there she often dominates it .. very interesting I plan to keep her and see how that develops .it looks like she's the thinker of the crowd .

 We had a few new visitors yesterday for the chatting and we were able to maintain 10 feet distance without much trouble .mothers with children are always a challenge ..

children in general are always a challenge until properly trained

My bedroom is really quite a manufacturing entity .. I still have a lot of the little plastic dishes  with a few toys like monkey fist and pen which I could send off for $15 postage . so there is all that Cardboard boxes an packing tape in one corner ..

 

then there is the monkey fists   this new quarter inch rope from the Netherlands makes a lovely 2 inch monkey fist which Donna is now dying for a red white and blue bunch I think linda's getting $10 each for those ..  And there's always the monkey fist zipper pulls ..

 

since we no longer go to the nursing homes and the pictures are too big to Mail conveniently I have a great quantity of old calendars where I was madding the pictures and taking them too nursing homes decorate the walls with something more enthusia stick then skies and oceans .

 

Keeping the production ahead of orders keeps me busy .At 2:00 AM .

Yesterday was the best day I have had in a very long time. Kringle and I were blessed with a very caring friend who drove us to see a very special young man that we had not spent a day with since July 1st. Our hearts are now full of love and admiration for family, our country, and the generosity of others. Yes, we saw Braden and I saw not my child, but a Navy Man. Kringle, Jill, and I were very proud.

My heart is broken.  

Unfortunately Merles condition had gotten worse over the past couple weeks. The osteosarcoma in her back leg had progressed and she could no longer do any stairs. 

Today she crossed the rainbow bridge.   

In our 4 1/2 years together Merle was always by my side keeping me mobile and balanced as the ‘Director of Mobility Stability Operations’ We traveled on over 150 fights, stayed in some great hotels and went to some of the best restaurants. She impressed in every time zone and represented Service Dog Project well. 

I don’t know how I’m going to be without her. 

I want to thank you, Linda, Dr George and everyone at SDP for giving me the gift of Merle.

OCT 3 2020

 stowe reports are ....  encouraging....  not relieving... but encouraging...  

 

Her fever is gone

The blood and urine cultures are still pending

She is tolerating her antibiotics well (she is on very aggressive antibiotics)

They put her on a heart monitor today – it has a normal rhythm

Her breathing is good

They are going to repeat her white cell count tomorrow to compare it to when she came in

The fluid intake is being monitored to find a good balance – they decreased it today when they saw some fluid build up around her heart and lungs

Blood pressure is ok – compared to when she arrived

 

She did get up on her own and drink water and did walk outside for them to pee!

 

Taking it 12 hours at a time ….. 

 as are the reports of all you cp's adding a buck or two to the fun fund....we  certainoy have teh first week covered.... they tell me her future meds .... when she is at home... could be expensive...  and i said we would worry about that when the situation arrived and i am sure we will..

Today we're gonna try and break up the  the 15 puppies into three groups there will be channel (KENNEL  I DO GO THRU AND CLEAN UP DICTATION A BIT....)10 on line the the back condo area on line and then the group in the nut house AKA used car lot those will not you will not be able to see those ..

 

and then as the day goes on we will rotate them around and bring them all back to the condo for overnight .. the one thing we need to fix there is to make something out there more agreeable for the overnight person to read a book or whatever the light is a little dim out there but if I could graduate all 15 puppies to living in the condo and going out onto the deck  SO A great part of their training would be moving along -----and I could get at my coffee pot in the morning without any complication .I'm already wearing my riding chaps which I haven't worn to ride in in probably 25 years but they do cover my lower leg with leather to deflect 15 puppies toenails at oh God how many how many toenails per foot there gonna be at least 4 and a dewclaws 5 we're talking 18 toenails per puppy times 15 puppies 270  toenails but attack me every morning .chaps are wonderful .

 

THE PLUSSES AND MINUSSES  

WE HAPPILY ADDED BELL A #2 BACK ON OUR STAFF  AS AVAILABLE.... AROUND WHATEVER COLLEGE SHE IS GOING TO.  SHE IS A GOOD ONE !!   

before we have any comments either on the Explore comment column or on Facebook all you people have to realize that we have to be able to make personnel changes as we see fit without comments from all you people who don't necessarily know what's going on .. and if I try and make comments to explain anyone LEAVING   then it gets too complicated and too personal so when these things happen just take it and accept it without a great negative buzz to get going .

people's lives change --- their needs change ---they don't all fit in here---hopefully the people here are perfectly capable of dealing with the CHORE  at hand .

Luckily my personal chore at hand  IS driving around a golf cart drinking coffee .  That is what I'm to do between the daily doggy add Mail call. The only comments I have are not for the print media .. this should save a great deal of money in the swear bear .

 

I will try and keep everyone updated  about sto in the daily doggy -- 

if you need something to worry about , if she is OK to come home after this you can then worry about sizzle and stole trying to live in the same household . two females can be almost as bad as two males but I've seen that work ..

case in point BMW kettle in Long Island run by Laura somebody I bought Tiffany from her and took Tiffany back to her to be bred .. she had two females not spayed who basically lived on a twin mattress on the floor in her huge entranceway absolutely no problem she then went around back of the house where there were four male dogs all of the same pen sort of she took one out Johnny his name was bread Tiffany and put him back in the pen with three others .I could not do that . she had it under control I'm not even gonna try that ----she is also the one we have a photograph of with five huge great Danes in a very small rowboat without too much would showing

over the water if any of the move they're all fall in she used to take them over to fire island to run I might be inclined to try five dogs in a rowboat but I can't even get two males anyways near each other .

Today we had a fun field trip to The Dancing Horses Theatre

and Animal Gardens. They were so wonderful and welcoming with Finn- I mean his training and behavior speaks for itself but they could have easily & legally said no SD. Finn’s training is so amazing! We really haven’t been able to keep him “exposed” to a variety of environments since COVID& today was a crazy day full of critters, different moving mobiles to ride on, flashing lights, loud music and people & horses running around with flames on their backs! Ok it was really glowing flame fabric under black lights but still!!

So what do you think Finn did?!?!?

Remained the perfect gentleman that he always is!!  Even when one of the mini donkeys wanted to make friends, he wanted no part of that, but totally behaved! He even earned us the VIP section! (Well at least that’s what they told us LOL) They were a little concerned he would make the horses nervous during the show and in that spot they’d be unlikely to notice him.

You all think that’s cool?!? Well guess what!!!! Eve decided to try the stairs there herself with Finn. She had enough of me helping her I guess. No braces- hasn’t walked or really weight beared at all in 10 months with all the things going on in her legs (fingers crossed the surgery coming up puts her back on her feet) she made it almost all the way up!!!! Never ever would this have happened without Finn! It’s been rough in that department this year - I’m so so happy to see she hasn’t totally given up the idea of walking..... because honestly at this point I can’t blame her if she does.

I KNOW Finn keeps that possibility alive for her and I’m so grateful for the amazing blessing we have been given by Service Dog Project

i can not get all  news in one dd  but here goes...

2020 10 2

How to put any of this into 25 words or less is be difficult . stowe  was placed with a family in New Hampshire and our  very experienced staff was to be keeping track of her . we got glowing reports that she was fine just not in heat ever .I never checked up ---so the fact that there was a huge  problem. Is basically my fault. .INSPECT WHAT YOU EXPECT ---WAS NEVER MORE TRUE.    SDP was responsible for the supervision of stowe. 

fortunately the family called to say stowe didn't look well and was not eating......   

to skip forward to the current . i sent  Pam  -- who picked her up--    She was lethargic and covered with fleas---- I didn't want to bring her here until we got a better line of what was wrong plus get rid of the fleas so I sent her directly to the emergency vet care in Andover Bulger hospital who kept her overnight cleaned her up and when I talk to them in the morning—the vet quite rightly

Gave me heck for not keeping track of this dog and why did I not realize what was going on with this dog.  With a not very subtle “just who was in charge of this dog ? “--- it was determined I could bring her home on medication and she would recover  ---probably ---no major things were uncovered at that point---- I did opt to bring her home knowing that they would have done more studies if I'd left her there however when I called back mid morning Bulger had closed on an emergency basis because of the cover virus .  so when she got home and began to spike a temp we tried to go to our local that who immediately sent her to Woburn which is the Massachusetts emergency vet hospital in Woburn------ to the tune of $2500 a day probably.

 I have opted to try and give her a chance which boils down to ---she will be there for a week if she survives everything and then will be home and on medication for another month or two which we ought to be able to handle without any problem--- it's the week in the Hospital that will involve care tests medications which could also be risky but we're gonna try . I will match what is in the fun fund so the $10,000. Required deposit  Is covered.

 

Boils down to … faced with a mess…. We will do the best we can for stowe.. which just might  be a recovery—however it might also be storke/heart attack.   I did sign a do not resuscitate order for her … which I feel is in her best interest.

 

AS ANGRY AS I AM ABOUT THE CONDITION OF  STOWE ,  I must not get negative, because there are many  people  I can  and do trust.

vVery late   I have been dealing with stowe and her medical problems which took time 

basically her temp is down and this is the report I just sent to the vet

 

Tuesday

 One of our females that we had parked with a family for breeding was returned to us yesterday becausw it was reported she was didn't look good

we picked her up  9pm   quite lethargic and full of fleas not eating in a few days

Took her straight to Bulger checked her in For one overnight . Temp 104.8 lethargic

 

They said they sent a report to “ our local vet” which I would have listed as you…

I have attached the discharge note…  and bill – for medes used.

Mostly uti.. fleas with slight kidney involvement by ultrasound.

 

This morning..  101.4 still pretty quiet will wag her tail minimally

 drank a sip of water

both front feet swollen the one on the downside is larger than the one on the upside …

 

still no interest in food….  “amox with food” will be a problem 

 

 I would rather not move her.. unless absolutely necessary

 

..would happily pay for house call….

 

Or just wait…  The no food is bothering me..

We can do fluids here…. If you say so..

obviously we have our hands full at the moment so that's it .. boiling chicken and getting cheese and things like that she's getting individual care we had someone sit with her overnight plus somebody with the puppies so everybody is fine under control I wish she would eat .. she's refusing chicken and everything ..

 

they gave us a prescription for amoxicillin which I believe we already have ..

 

there is a small possibility it could be that crazy Bigfoot that I've talked about for the past 20 years lethargic stop eating high temperature temperature breaks and then the foot swells and in a day or so they're fine ..  for awhile George thought I was crazy but every dog related to the BMW kennel bloodline seemed to get that damn Bigfoot at least once .. after 20 years he started calling it the Bigfoot also which may be what we have now .. the problem is we don't have the current history ..
