the mary job at appleton farms went well yesterday -- except for the first time in a long time i was here absolutely alone for a couple hours - til volunteers drifted in.

mary unloaded at appleton without incident-- and got back on the trailer to come home-- but once home she worried about that step down trailer. in the push off to step down she once went to her knees- and she has never forgotten that-- 12 years ago.

a new volunteer who had never met mary commented "look at the stubborn donkey"

it is tough to shed a preconceived notion

sterling was here and asked gigi to dinner-- she said "not yet" - so he will be back today to see if she had a change of heart.

we sent alan home with the breifest of instructions--it worked well for his son to pick him up today with out having to jockey children around...- and tess was following him around without a leash--- which is one of my big criteria for deciding when the dog is learning to work with someone.

he has had a serv dog before--the part i meant for megan to go over with him was the stairs--- one at a time-- under strict control as long as the harness is on.. the "gimme a step--whoa" is the routine--

alan --- i would practice that with her for those times when there is no hand rail.. she is good at it--- but would happily forget it and go bounding up or down the steps... so keep after her.

he paid for the harness i had just bought-so i am back to scrounging around for harness for training

the command as the kitchen barrier is opened is " outside" loudly as you run to open that outside front door too. as we progress--- and they start to "go" in the house a loud " outside" then has meaning.

actually any time you open the door you should be saying either " outside--- or wait" indecision in a dog is a bad thing.

now for the life experiences to share

those very sharp knives advertised on tv--ceramic knives-- never needs sharpening.. well--- i bought one... and while th e coffee perked... i read the directions.

the reason it never needs sharpening is all the things you may not do with it--like frozen peas--chicken with bones,,, or even hard cheese.... and don't chop stuff--- this is for slicing soft bread ,tomatoes..and your fingers if you don't keep it in it's special holder.

of course - never put it in the dishwasher.

not the kind of thing condusive to a long life here on the farm

life is complete--"the 3 hats" have not had breakfast .... they have a pizza box to shred first---

and i had to bring in chaos pups--- it was cold out there-- got to redo that- we need to have an in and out the doggie door practice with them so we can get some heat going and keep them in that 4x4 area just in the door of the back room.

it is hug a HEATER weather again.

and we have not had a pancake poop in 2 days

and they are beginning to look like rolly puppies

It is raining. Real rain. It has been raining for four hours now. Slow soaking rain. I know you probably don't understand my joy. Especially since Danes and rain don't seem to mix.

We haven't had any rain to speak of in three months. The wildfires have even come close to my house and I live in a very populated area in Arlington between Dallas and Fort Worth. It is scary when someone can set off a fire that burns 1,000 houses and hundreds of thousands of acres of land just by being stupid. One spark from a saw set off a big blaze the other day. It took two days for firemen to contain it.
This is the worst it has ever been in Texas in recorded history. I know the rain tonight won't cure it, but it will help.

Stormy opened the back door several times to go out. She looks at the rain and backs up and closes the door.

I have never understood the Great Dane attitude about rain and walking on wet grass when it is raining. None of mine will go out to pee even it they have to wait 24 hours. I have even gone out with them under an unbrella with me getting soaked while they just stand and look at me like I am out of my mind if I think they will pee when it is raining.
Yet, Stormy will sink herself into the stock pond mud up to her neck and sit. Cinder will go in, but she will only stand in the water and mud up to her belly.
I have to force them out of the house if the grass is just wet from rain. No sense at all. Or maybe they have some good sense and we just don't know what it is. Dogs seem to be a lot smarter than humans a lot of the time.
I hear more thunder. Rain, water, cool clear water and finally a break from the 100+ degrees. I think I will go out and pee in the yard to celebrate even if my dogs won't. If I get arrested, come bail me out, will you please?

everybody is excited so we will pack the van with people and dogs and have at it--- for a donation to serv dogs-- we will take both ears up and natural ears-- my guess would be bailey and bobbie--- but it could be pistol and fido or jasper if we think we can travel with bobbie and jasper in the coa van.. should be able to... red blood is such a bad thing on a photo shoot.

speaking of that.....i remember ( here we go again---) i had to go to new york for a shot they could not find ny dogs to do-- it was "rub a dub dub- three danes in a tub" -- simple enough---EXCEPT the tub was white and one of them must have just come in heat on the way down... much talk of a broken toenail and many many papertowels later they got the shot they needed and paid good money.

Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Today, Jerry and HeyDawg went on an adventure. Our first stop was the Wenham Town Hall. After a quick stop to say hello to the Town Clerk and get a cookie, we headed up the stairs to say hello to Traci. Her office has a nice rug. The town hall hallway floors are bright and shiny. When Hey turned around to come back out, he kind of freaked out. He would take a step or two into the hall and would leap back in. I let him catch his breath and we tried again. On the third try, he finally came out.

Next it was to the Board of Health office where I had some work to do. I took his leash off and let him wander around. I knew he wouldn't go back into the hallway without some coaxing. He did go from desk to desk checking out people, got another cookie, but most of the time, he was laying down, on the rug, by my side. When I was finished, we took the elevator down, got into the car and headed for the Hamilton-Wen ham Community House. Inside there were two women and three dogs. One dog was not too friendly so they put him into an office. The two little ones made friends with Hey upon sight. They were jumping up and down and wanted to play with him. Hey just stood there looking down at them trying to figure out what they were doing. Hey did good.

he next stop was the Hamilton Council on Aging building. We walked in during a COA board meeting. There were about 15 or 20 people there. The Director, Susan Carp, was chairing the meeting. Among other things, she also is responsible for the COA vans. The building has two wings. One is a large, tiled, room on the left where the meeting was being held and another large room on the right with a carpet. That's where we settled in. Again, Hey wondered around checking out furniture (no people in this wing) but most of the time he was laying down by my side. A few times I wandered into the meeting to comment. Hey stayed put. When the meeting was over, the members were standing around talking. I joined them and called for Hey to join us. He did. He was very popular with the group. A number of times I was asked if was ok to pat him. Again, Hey made me proud.

At this time my cell phone sounded. It was my bride. She knew I was taking Hey to the town hall but not on an all morning adventure. She had just arrived home and asked “where's my Hey doggie?" Never the less, I decided the adventure was over and headed home. Hey hit his couch and slept all afternoon. Me too.

hawkeye and carol were here for a visit while her husband mark cut off the posts that were holding up progress with the nut house--

today i need lift and carry types to move all the lumber up to the "construction site"

and i bought another 5 pounds of nails !! who would have thought????/

Sorry, have tried to send several diaries of the week's experiences; however, everytime I about finished one, my computer deleted in in it's entirety and I got too frustrated to attempt it after the third time. My computer has been down and I have been swamped with grading papers, continually constructing curriculum for English 10 and 11, and getting caught up on IEP Special Education paper work (I'm sure we have been reponsible for the missing forests in third world countries).

On with the show: We have had a plethora of exciting experiences over the last five days of high school. DiDi , by the way, looks at big trucks, but has not reacted to any, other than when we are out walking. Even then, she has been relatively controlled.

Where to start regarding school? We get up at 5am, she goes out to pee, bounding back in the house for breakfast with a little yogurt, and we leave for school at 6:50/7am. She is fine walking to and into the building (unless we are later than usual and the buses are pulling up, wherein she tries to sprint with me to the nearest building doors). DiDi does very well walking the hallways when a few students are around, but she definately dislikes the loud noises before and during school of slamming lockers, loud students, and kids running up behind her on their way to classes.

This morning as the Principal walked by us in the hallway, several kids slammed their lockers and she desperately searched for an open doorin an all out panick- she even figured a closed door might work if she pushed on it; perhaps I would open it for her and save her from the commotion.

I generally stay late to get work done, and she is good company. But I have found that she is very uncomfortable with the sports kids hanging around waiting for sports activities to start, so we try to go out through the front door.

She is loved by the faculty, and seems to do well with them and trusts them, for the most part. Several teachers, will stop by periodically for some pet therapy, which DiDi is ok with. We try to stay out of the hallways during passing times, unless there are presentations in the auditorioum, I need a bathroom break, or another teacher needs some technology help (that's a real mistake, as technology and I are not best friends).

She has done very well laying inbetween the narrow rows of seats in the auditorium with the clapping, loud kids, and presentations . Yet in the classroom, she is skittish around the students (8-10 per class) and so stays very close to me or if feeling particularly threatened by approaching students, she will partially hide under my desk and/or shake. At other times, she will casually roam the room with me in her sights, even laying in the middle of a circle of student desks when we have reading circles/activities. I 'm sure she will acclamate with time, although if you have any suggestions to help ease and hurry the process, it would be appreciated. Our after work activities have gone smoothly, be it going to the mall, out to eat, various stores, church meetings, and friends homes. She really is a beautiful, sweet girl and we love her dearly. Will keep you up on our progress and adventures.

my recommendation here is to get a chair and sit in the classroom door - have her lie down at your feet and :"achieve boredom" if you act bored maybe you can get her to be bored.

keep in mind- you have no idea what she is reacting to. could be someone smells funny to her-- you must have heard my story with tiffany and the one kid out of 100,000 she decided needed to be chewed up.

Hi,
Martha Dean and I took Stormy to Love Field in Dallas to Southwest Airlines. They are great friends of mine. I have been going there with my dogs for over twelve years. They were happy to have Stormy come to train.
We started in the terminal. Bryan from Inflight Training met us there and we toured the entire terminal. We walked the concourse, went down the tunnel into an airplane that was getting ready to take off. Bryan let us lead the way so we experienced everything. Stormy was a real trooper. When we got to the baggage area, she didn't shy away from all the moving suitcases and the noise. She was just curious. I thought she might like a ride around on the conveyor the way she was looking at the belt, so I made sure I had a firm grip on her.
After we were done exploring all the areas of the terminal, we headed over to headquarters where they have "Poolie" a simulator for training the flight attendants. It is a real airplane with the nose, wings and tail cut off. We got on and walked the aisle from the front to the back. Then I backed Stormy into the seat area and put her under the seat. She needed a little help to get her hips swung over the right direction so she could scoot under the seat and curl. She had plenty of room.
I think Martha had her doubts when I said she would fit under the seat but became a believer when she saw Stormy comfortably sitting under the seat. Rene, our guide had already seen Cinder under the seat so she knew Stormy would fit. She told me it still amazed her whenever she saw one of my dogs scoot under the seat and curl up.
We sat in our seats, buckled in while Rene put "Poolie" though its take off, landing, bank right, bank left, smoke in the cabin and a simulated crash. Stormy noticed the smoke before we did. She was a little nervous. I just kept petting her and acting as if nothing was wrong. She calmed down almost immediately. The noises of the crash and the hydraulics that move the airplane around didn't seem to faze Stormy. She actually started to fall asleep when we were talking with some of the flight attendants who came on board to see Stormy under the seat.
We have declared her ready for her flight to Ipswich on November 2.
We met a lot of people who knew me from all my past flying and demonstrations at Southwest. I don't allow petting when Stormy is working, but the day at Southwest was special. I wanted Stormy to feel good, so everyone was petting her. Besides, it is a lot to ask of Southwest employees to take so much time out of their day to help us get Stormy ready for her flight. They deserve to pet her.
We will go out there one more time before we fly. It is great to have Southwest's headquarters close to us so we can use their simulator to train. Stormy will be sending them a special thank you for their time.
When you have a great, Great Dane you always get a lot of attention during our visits. Stormy is the third generation Great Dane to be honored to be a part of the Inflight Training Department at Southwest Airlines at Love Field. Southwest LUVs Stormy. ********************

Good morning Carlene,
Sorry this is black and small. I lost my font and color pallet. Hey is now accustomed to the cars, small trucks and motorcycles in the parking lot so we now have a calmer walk to the school. Corridors are fine and he seems to look forward to the cafeteria where the students gather. Elevators are still fine. I took him to class Monday evening where I was scheduled to do a presentation. We ran into the shiny floor in the classroom. He did fine walking on and did a graceful down/stay. He had moments of the shakes when the students began to arrive and when I had to leave him to speak directly to a student. The problem was he couldn't get up when it was time to leave. I gave him a few quiet moments (students were great as they were quiet too) and after the third attempt he made it up. He just couldn't get paw traction. I am thinking of getting a Yoga mat to bring into any room that does not have a rug. That certainly would give him traction. I practiced on one that a colleague has. What a site with my bum in the air and my arms and legs trying to move the mat. It was super, not movement at all. So what do you think??

when i have a dog with this problem i just stand with my feet o either side of their rear end and prevent the feet from sliding sideways... as long as you can come to an agreement with him and not have him flail about, it is easily done next time you are here i can show you..

i totally understand how pickpockets work..

one slight distraction and the best of systems breaks down.

and olives pups can be distracting- to say the least

colleen forgot to feed bobby and noel last night-- so i did that- no problem

as i was shutting things down to go to bed... NO LUNA--- adrenalin kicked in and i was no longer sleepy as i searched the closets etc here in the house- no luna--- i called and called-- finally figuring if i had left her out she would be sleeping in one of the cribs in the t-tent--- no luna-- i checked the ambulance and coa van-- no luna--

i almost assumed she would not be in the laundry-- and was about to go to the house - when murphy's law taught me what can't be possible often is... and there she was smiling away waiting to go to bed in the house.

i was actually in the phase of "i have to call someone"

which made me wonder... call who?? which made me stop and think.. LUCKILY

there is only the laundry and cabin LEFT TO INSPECT....... where she never is... and bingo !! murphy's law wins again.

WE TOOK QUESTIONABLY PREGO LUNA TO VISIT GEORGE YESTERDAY AND AFTER A "FEELS WIERD" SESSION , HE DID AN ULTRASOUND-- AND THERE IS AT LEAST ONE PUP IN THERE.. LOOKS LIKE IT IS HUGE- AND GEORGE HAD TROUBLE IDENTIFYING IT'S VARIOUS BITS AND PIECES--- LIKE THE HEART--THERE ARE A FEW OTHER THINGS IN HER THAT GEORGE COULD NOT IDENTIFY.. SO THE BASIC PLAN IS TO LET HER GET CLOSER TO DELIVERY AND TAKE AN XRAY.. BUT IN ALL PROBILITY WE ARE LOOKING AT CAESARIAN-- AND THAT MIGHT HAVE A DUBIOUS OUTCOME ANYWAY.

SO WITH ONE FOOT FIRMLY PLANTED IN MID AIR--- WE CONTINUE

WE HAD TO GET SOME OPINION FROM GEORGE BECAUSE SHE JUST DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A NORMAL PREGNANCY-- AND I HAVE NOT FLET ANY PUPS MOVING IN HER.. IT WAS TO THE POINT OF SHE EITHER NEEDED MORE FOOD BECAUSE SE WAS PREGO=== OR LESS BECAUSE SHE WAS JUST FAT.

SO TODAY I WILL COOK SOME CHICKEN FOR HER
