i laughed,,,,. at nobody really. ...... i should. not have laughed? ... let me tell you why i could not have stopped laughing
we have a lovely new whelping box--- white/ flowers/ very tidy—probably perfect....... however.....
i had a whelping box once. .... a while ago-- and mom had her first pup in it..... the second and third she had on the sofa and the forth in front of the refrigerator---she then stopped----and it got to be 3. hours with no more contractions---yet i could feel pups moving in her. so i called George(DVM) to check in. he said to "give her a bit more and if nothing then bring her down for shots and C section if necessary.
ok we had a plan. nothing happened....
so we took the 4 pups in. a nice clean white and flowered laundry basket -- put them on the back seat of my car. (the "emergency car" a regular car ---gas tank full ---) which we had covered with a cotton fluffy--- with mom also on the back seat.....--- betty was in the front seat – me driving -- out the driveway.
One mile later betty said “I think she is contracting- she just ripped the fluffy.... ”. And she was .. betty loosened her seat belt and turned starting to deal as pup “A” was born as we turned onto route 95—not a huge deal... betty had been in on many births so she held “A” upside down for a minute to drain and then rubbed to stimulate and get it breathing—and yelping- that initial yelp which means they are going to try and be alive....
4 miles later--- Betty is rubbing when mom starts pushing as we approach the exit betty says “holy shoot—another is coming” I say “well put that one in the basket and remember which one because it has not nursed the colostrum. Yet.. “..... betty is good.... with the seat belt buzzing that annoying buzz she had 4 sleeping one that needed to nurse and one needing to breathe—and she had not lost it yet... as I turned around supinos reataurant a mile later ,, I hear “ damn—another” so I pulled into supinos restaurant parking and got out – taking the “yet to breathe”, pup ”B” from her.. with afterbirth still attached--- while betty and mom dealt with pup “C”.... I could hear betty talking to mom and it seemed to be going normally .. and pup “C” screamed the initial welcome scream.... I I. gave a pull to “B’s” afterbirth – it broke away at the normal place—and I just dropped it in the parking lot... put the pup “B” in with “A” in the basket... and with betty backwards in the passenger seat and the seat belts still blaring I got back in and drove to george’s about ½ mile away.... by then betty had “C” breathing and had put it in with basket with the others.
George came out and took one look at the sleeping pups in the. Basket..and said “looks normal to me ---what are you so excited about? Did you get all the afterbirths?” I told him the seagulls got one and the other two were probably under the back seat of my car........ so don’t buy a used car from me.”
And that is just one story............ so forgive me.....
