there are sooooo many things we do with the dogs to get them ready for training.. in the good old days of teh photo on my book of the "george" litter being spoon fed.... and i never wrote down much so things have slid --- i was not there to watch....now that i am cov bound with not much to do... i am noticing...everything is going along normally.. but i would prefer to exceed normal....
detaiols... like putting a dog in the car.... sounds simple and it it if they are "prepared correctly.. it starts very young ...
at feeding, when they stand at theri "table" from the house/my computer i get to see theri rear ends...and the streegnth thereof.... but.. as we put the dishes down it is necessary to stick you r fingr out so that they don't rush in and spill it all over with a very quick /"wait" ok" that hesitation is not a long winded affqir wher it is "see how i can dominqte the dog" but a very practical hold it for a second... this then becomes the basis for unloading from the car when you have to open a hatchback and can not stand in front whilt it goes up. you stick you hand out and say "wait" and they understand 100% they got it from the 2 daily lessons a the food dish. THEN after tthe eat theyr return toi their kennekls and rush in and turn around because they know the "gate keepoer" will have a cookie as a treat for going in..... well that turn for a cookie is what makes them turn around for the cookie and get theri tail out of the way of teh closing hatchback ... or any door.
to insist on handlers having a cookie as a " getting in ther" reward. in the kennel environment ... sounds like an unnecessary detail... but i challange anyone to take a generic dog and teqch them to relaibly get their tail ouit of the way when they go thru a door. it would take a while... our pups know to turn.
it has been a long time since i felt the need to actually explqin some of the details. yesterday 2 dogs---- cosmo had come for a visit and run inthe field... and judy had tim to go out training... the people who had cosmo wer amazed at all the little thihgs that made him a super dog - as he leaped into thir car and turned looking for a cookie she noticed that... i had forgotten to tell her... that if she did not have a cookie, the best she coudn do was a huge "head shaking good boy" and then shut the door. .. where judy had seen the operation as complete when she got in the car, sat downand reached for her cookie container which she carefully had right at her side. perfect... except dogs senses are "A" caused "B" instantly, so the dog would concentrate on judy sitting downi s what caused the cookie to appear.... "so i better turn qaround and get ready for her to sit down"... .. which puts his tail in trouble with the closing hagtchbac,k..
there are soo many details ... many are car related.... coming back from training. open the hatchand let the run for few minutes?? no way do iwant theise dogs to jump our=t of a car and run arond... you set teh patteren,, jump out ... i say thank youu with a big head scratch and then tell you to run. THAT is mso much better than them running around costco parking lot becasue gthat is what they RE ALLOWED O DO WHEN YOU OPEN THE DOOR AT HOME.
MY 2 DOOR... HOT CAR EXERCISE?? SUMMER YOU GET OUT OF THE CAR... LEAVE THE DRIVERS DOOR OPEN GET TEH DOG OUTTHEON LIASH. SHUT THE HATCH TH4EN SHUT THE DRIVER DOORT. WHY? WE HAD A WOMAN WHO GOT OUT--- SHUT THE DOOR AND FAINTED. THAT LEFT HER ONTHE GROUND WITH AN EXCITED AMBULANCE CREW, AND THE DOG IN THE CAR WITHBOTH DOORS AND WINDOWS SHUT. LUCKILY SHE WOKE ENOUGH TOI ALERT EVERYONE... BUT... THE POTENTIAL IS THERE.. AND SETTING A PATTERN IS NOT A HARD THING TO DO. ANYONE CAN FAINT OR PASS OUT. IT TAKES A SPLIT SECOND TO GOBACK AND SHUT AFTER THE DOG IS OUT. DO IT.
WITH MANY NEW VOLUNTEERS AND HANDLERS I NEED TO GIVE LESSONS ON WHAT IS EXPECTED.. IT IS NOT ANYONE'S FAULT BUT MINE IF THEY DON'T KNOW... IF THEY DO KNOW... AND DON'T, THAT IS INEXCUSEABLE.
HOPEFULLY THE REALY INTERESTED PEOPLE READ THIS....
