This is somewhat of a public service announcement and it may be that this is common knowledge to many, but was completely unknown to me until recently. Several months ago a couple in their 30's was driving the back roads near my farm, photographing the sites. At one point they misjudged a railroad crossing and their car ended up stuck on the tracks with the drive wheels off the ground. The husband got out OK, but his wife's seat belt would not unlock.

According to those who know, he tried frantically to unlock the seat belt, but had no knife or other way to free her. At some point he ended up in the back seat trying to free her and then the train came. Both perished.
Weeks later while crossing that junction, I stopped to ask a railroad worker who happened to be there, why there is not a phone number conspicuously posted which one could call in an emergency to stop the train. He pointed to a small ?6"x10" metal plate bolted to a post which has exactly that, along with a unique code identifying that location. Had that been known to these people, I would suspect a different outcome.
Moral of story being...there is such a plate, required by law, at every RR crossing in the USA. Perhaps it is time for railroads to advertise this fact to those whom might actually need that info., but short of that...tell everyone you know.
