Moxie, we think she’s eleventeen, has good and bad days as it seems she is feeling her age quite a bit, trouble controlling her bowels often. She still loves sniffing around the yard for squirrels and rabbits and lying in the sun on her outdoor bed; she’s longing for those blistering hot summer days so she can lie on her back and really get some sunshine on her belly. Her bark can still shake the windows and echo through the neighborhood when she feels the need to really make her point, on other occasions it’s more like a whimper or a pantomime suggestion of a bark. Moxie is super aware of everything going on in the house, and she gets off her couch and trots over to whenever two or more people are watching a video on their phone; she loves seeing dogs and puppy videos of any kind and then she barks and barks; “Go away!” Or is it “Come over here!” or “What are you doing over there?” She’ll also get up to join us wherever we are in the house when anyone starts singing Happy Birthday to someone on speaker phone or FaceTime. Sometimes she joins in the singing. She is also incredibly empathetic, even more than normal for a Dane, (Duncan was like this too) hyper aware of laughter or crying or sadness and will want to comfort anyone if they’re sad or crying or just be present. Here are a couple pictures of Moxie in February telling Kathryn, our oldest daughter who’s a nurse midwife, that she knows Kathryn is pregnant (our first grandchild is due in June).
Piper, pretty sure she’s nine, on the other hand, is such a goofy, lovable kid still. We call her our “Curious Cat” as she has to investigate everything inside and outside the house. Always asking “What is it? Can I look at the mail? Can I smell it? What was that noise? What’s that smell? What’s in that bag? What’s in that box? Can I come with you to the basement to look around and smell everything again?” I am pretty sure I could get her to climb the attic pull down stairs if I asked her, but I won’t because she would realize that they’re too steep and I’d never get her down. She knows all the different toys in her toy basket by name and if you ask her, and she’s interested in playing the game, she’ll go and find and bring you the toy asked for. Her bark is massive (huge lungs on this dog) and she’s also the growler. Moxie growls sometime, but never like Piper’s lovely deep Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr! It’s never a bared-teeth growl, just this very low bass vibrato, and the hackles sometimes from head to tail, but not always. That’s a curious biologist question why the hackles are up in different places, sometime tail, sometimes scruff of her neck. Hmmm. Is it random or not. I don’t know. So many questions. So little time.

I must admit I was a little taken aback!!
Degal, and some others, I believe Bertha and one other.
I was hooked.
Then Degal decided to impregnate all the girls and there was a birthing party.
Sleeping on the office floor, birthing pups, going to George for someone who had a breech pup.
Then it was Animal Episode. Which morphed into the most wonderful Service Dogs Project.
You’ve done an incredible thing.
I miss all of that
