boxford is the next town to ipswich boxford being our street--
because of that old new england custom which 150 years ago made sense.... this is the street in ipswich that goes to boxford... consequently... there are 5 boxford roads in this area-- raises heck with the gps things if you are not careful
it makes perfect sense that boxford rd.. ipswich becomes ipwsich road in boxford and just because there is a very short piece of topsfield the one roade technically... is coming off th e highway.....topsfield rd,boxford becomes boxford road in topsfield becomes ipswich road in topsfield becomes topsfield rd in ipswich and after that is the atlantic ocean.
it is supposed to make finding your way around easier...

which brings to mind.... is it penna that labels the exits with the mile markers?i think all highways are labeled with mile markers starting at the southernmost point where it enters the state .. police use that numbering system " car accident at marker 72.6 northbound is only one place.. if we were used to looking for and using them it would make finding exits much easier-- you would know how many miles to your exit... a critical bit of info if you are traveling with small children who have been bitten by the "are we there yet?" bug.
i know my daughter gwen lives at mm 80 on rt 1A-- within 10 miles that rt 1A changes name/town/ and numbering system 4 times.. also... i think they were putting their house on the market - i tried to sell it to sheila -- some parts were great for her... it is a nice house.
when gwen bought it 25 years ago , it had a full greenhouse growing facility in the basement-- apparently that is why it had t be sold quickly-- the DEA had noticed the activity while flying overhead in a helicopter.
i did not mean to imply shelia might be able to make use of the inside greenhouse-- gwen had to dismantle it in the process of buying the house. but it is a great conversation piece....and gwen had alot of very strange visitors for the first few months they owned the place..

THE FREEZER IS FUNCTIONAL -- THE "CRANEY GUY" FINISHED THE LAST BIT.... HE TOLD ME THERE IS A HEATER COIL AROUD THE DOOR--- NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT--- IT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE FOR THE DOOR TO GET FROZEN SHUT... NOW THERE IS ANOTHER THING FOR ME TO WORRY ABOUT.. THAT LITTEL CLICKER OVER THE DOOR REALLY SHUTS THE DOOR WITH AUTHORITY--- AND IF IT EVER GOT FROZEN YOU WOULD HAVE A REAL PROBLEM..
.SPEAKING OF FROZEN WATER.. I SHOULD PROBABLY NOT MENTION THIS... BUT.... WHEN I HAD ALL THOSE 4H KIDS IN LYNNFIELD.. THEY WERE IN CHARGE OF FEEDING AND WATERING ( EXCEPT SCHOOL MORNINGS)
WE HAD A "GATE VALVE" THAT SHUT OFF THE WATER DOWN 4' AND IS THE OLD FARMERS SOLUTOIN TO NEW ENGLAND WEATHER.... EXCEPT IN OUR CASE THE LAST 2 INCHES WOULD HAVE ENOUGH LEFT OVER WATER TO FREEZE JUST ENOUGH SO yOU COULD NOT TURN THE HANDLE.....
MOST THE OLD NEW ENGLAND FARMERS WERE MEN WHO ALWAYS HAD A SMALL QUANTITY OF WARM WATER IN THEIR BLADDERS--- AND BEING MEN ... IT WAS SIMPLE.
NOT TO BE OUTDONE--- MY 4H GIRLS DID LEARN THAT SOLVING THE PROBLEM THE OLD WAY WAS ALOT EASIER THAN RUNNING ALL TH E WAY BACK TO THE HOUSE FOR A CUP OF WARM WATER...IT JUST TOOK A LITTLE PLANNING AND ALOT OF PRACTICE AIMING.
A DETAIL OF LIFE ON THE FARM I BET YoU CITY FOLK HAD NOT CONSIDERED,...THERE IS ONE MORE SPOT WHERE THAT SOLUTION HAS BEEN USED... BEFORE ELECTIRICTY THERE WAS THE MANUAL PUMP.. WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO AlWAYS HVE A FRESH.SMALL CONTAINER OF WATER NEXT TO IT JUST IN CASE IT LOST IT'S PRIME (THAT CUP OF WATER THAT CAUSES THE FLAP INSIDE TO ACTUALLY DRAW WATER UP) MINUS IT'S PRIME IT IS USELESS-- CAN'T GET THE LIVESTOCK WATERED "IF THE PUP DON'T WORK."..
SO ONCE AGAIN THESE FARMERS FIGURED OUT WHERE THERE WAS A SMALL QUANTITY OF FLUID TO PRIME THE PUMP.
MOST PEOPLE USING THE EXPRESSION PRIMING THE PUMP, DON'T REALIZE THE ADDITIONAL IMPLICATIONS with the different meaning..
