boredom -- and the learning process.. i have long maintained that it is impossible to teach dog -- or child--- if their mind is darting from one exciting experience to another...studying anything often means studying the extreme situations... like you would have great difficulty teaching a high school kid advanced calculus in teh middle of a basketball game.-- maybe tehre is an "unless" there... that would be unless THIS KID had seen so many basketball games in which he/she had no interest.... thatTHEY WERE totally bored with them...
The dane puppy- and probably all puppies - go thru a change at abotu 3 weeks of "holy sh#t mom's milk bar is closing down and a darn welll better start looking for my own source of food....and these people seem to be a SOURCE SO I WILL JUMP AROUND FOR THEIR ATTENTION AND GET A MOUTHFUL--" teh usual group of misc puppies will jump around their pen... in an effort to get attentiono. this is why i am particularly proud ofr teh many photos of our pups sitting at the feet of someone-- me or other trainers... waiting for theri spoonful of canned food.. which they do love.. it must be noted the spooning is done after they have had their dinners so they are not "starving" i.e. they are ready to concentrate on something besides gastronomic survival.
SOMEBODY--???--- SAID YOU CAN NOT TEAch a hungry child- you at least must get rid of other distracting influences before you attempt-- with puppies you can't get rid of every disteracction... but you can give the pup exposure to so many of the distractions that they become boring.
so our pups learn early in teh game that hanging around with a person just "works out well" and they follow ( usually megan with a can of food and a spoon ) around the property in a group very willingly.... as she stopsand feeds them every couple hundred feet.
that stARTS IT... MANY "NORMAL" ( GOLDEN RETRIEVER) TYOPE TRAINERS CALL IT SOCIALIZATION... AND THEY MEAN PEOPLE-- BUT OUR DOGS- AS FUTURE SERVICE DOGS HAVE TO GO MUCH FURTHER... AND IGNORE NOT ONLY PEOPLE-- BUT.. EXCITING THINGS... LIKE THOSE HORSES IN TEH MALL THAT YOU PUT A QUARTER IN SO SOME KID CAN GET BOUNCED UP AND DOWN FOR 25 CENTS.
OR TEH OCASIONAL SQUIRREL-- OR A BUS WITH AIR BRAKES- OR BALLOONS--OR SCREAMING CHILDREN... OR OLD WOMEN WHO STICK OPUT THEIR FINGERS AND COMMAND "SIT"-- THERE IS NO END...AS THEY GET TO ONE YEAR OLD, THEY DO ACHIEVE BOREDOM- AND TEH WORD "DISTRACTED" IS NOT OFTEN ON THIER DAILY REPORT-- AND WE BEGIN TO GET "GOOD ON TEH STAIRS... GREAT IN THE LADIES ROOM...PERFECT AT BRACING" THEN WE ARE GETTING SOMEWHERE.
MUCH AS I HATE SITTING FOR HOURS AT THE TOYOTA DEALER WHILE THEY CHANGE TEH STEM IN A TIRE- IT IS TEHE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHIHNG TO DO BESIDES SIT THERE A HAVE A PUP DO THE SAME THING..I.E. NOTHING
EVERY PUP I HAVE HAD THERE HAS BECOME BORED-- AT LEAST IN THAT ATMOSPHERE-- COUPLE TIMES IT HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE IN A PUP IN GENERAL..
YOU CAN NOT PULL ANY SIGNIFICIENT SOUND BITES OUT OF OUR DOG TRAINING...-- BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE A GOOD ONE... HOW DOES CARLENE TRAIN DOGS? SHE SITS IN TEH TOYOTA WAITING ROOM...-- THERE WOUDL BE AN ELEMNET WHO WOULD RUSH OFF TO TOYOTA DEALSERS AND SIT AROUND-- THEN WONDER WHY THE DOG DOES NOT BECOME TRAINED.
FOR THOSE-- THERE IS NO HOPE

now about carrots--- the only reference i could find regarding truckloads of carrots for horses....was this one...i think british...
so apparently teh concept does exist??
I kept my horse on a stud farm at one time. We were near a carrot producing area. All the horses got to eat was haylage and carrots. The stabled ones got a builders bucketful twice a day (probably around 10kg a day) and the ones out in winter had a lorryload tipped in the field. They all did fine on them. Sometimes there were beetroot in the carrots which turned to poo purple.
