I HAD AN EMAIL FROM SOMEONE WHO USES THE MARTINGALE COLLAR-- WHICH IS A COMPINATION OF LEATHER AND CHAIN WHICH TIGHTENES BUT DOES REALLY SQUEEZE...
MY CONTENTION IS THAT A TRAINING COLLAR IS A TOOL THAT IF USED PROPERLY....TEACHES TH EDOG NOT  TO PULL AGAINST IT
SO I WROTE THIS....
**************
I WILL PUT THIS IN THE DAILY DOGGIE-- SO I MUST PREFACE IT BY SAYING... THIS NEXT INCIDENT WAS WITH A BEAUTIFUL, TOUGH PITT BULL, WHO WAS ACCUSTOMED TO HAVING HIS OWN WAY....  THE ENTIRE STORY MUST BE TEMPERED WAY DOWN FOR A MINI PIN OR TOY POODLE.. OBVIOUSLY... BUT THE TECHNIQUE  WORKS..
*************
I WROTE  TO HER.....

ANYCOLLAR/HARNESS   THAT ALLOWS TEH DOG TO PULL AGAINST IT COMFORTABLY IS COUNTERPRODUCTIVE... IN THE CASE OF HANDICAPPED PEOPLE THEY CAN NOT HOLD ON TO THAT KIND OF THING... BETTER THAT THE DOG LEARN NOT TO PULL --

SO OUR METHOD IS NEVER TO USE OUR MUSCLES TO CONTROL A DOG-.  IF THE DOG STARTS TO GET AHEAD, JUST JIGGLE THE COLLAR AS BEST YOU CAN TO REMIND THEM OF THIER EDUCATION...  ANY DOG WHO HAS THAT POOR A MEMORY DOES NOT BECOME A SERVICE DOG..

I TELL ALL OUR RECIPIENTS IF THE DOG  WERE TO PULL, LET TEHM GO- YOU CAN NOT HOLD TEHM WITH ANYTHNG... THEY HAVE TO WANT TO D THE RIGHT THING..  AND   THEY DO.... MAYBE BECAUSE OF THE SPOON FEEDING... BUT THEY DO....
************
THERE WAS A SPECTACULAR INCIDENT -- I WISH IT WAS FILMED... A 100 POUND PIT BULL THE OWBNERS COULD NOT EVEN DARE TO TAKE HIM OUT OF THE  BACK SEAT OF THEIR  CAR...  IN FULL VIEW OF TEH SUNDAY STEW CROWD HERE,,, I SAID I WOULD.. ... NUTT THAT I AM....THIS WAS ONE TOUGH DOG.. PRETTY STEEL GREY PITT BULL--- A  VERY  TOUGH MUTT---  BRED TO BITE AND HANG ON TO  A BULL....

I TOOK ONE OF OUR  TRAINING COLLARS ( ALSO CALLED ALOT OF OTHER THINGS  "PLAIN CHAIN."...) ---- WITH A LOOSE LEASH ,  I ASKED HIM TO GET OUT OF THE  CAR ONCE  ..HE TURNED HIS HEAD ONCE AND I PULLED FOR ALL I WAS WORTH AND HE LANDED AT MY FEET.. I LOOSENED THE PRESSURE ON HIM BY RELLAXING THE LEASH.AND SAID "GOOD BOY"  ---HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED...   HE STARTED TO RUN-- ( I AM GOOD AT TIMING..) . I SAID "NO " A SPLIT SECOND BEFORE  I GAVE IT A 2 HANDED YANK --  HE LANDED AT MY FEET  AGAIN... -- I RELAXED THE PRESSURE-- AND QUIETLY SAID "GOOD BOY NOW STAND STILL"     ONE MORE ATTEMPT TO RUN-- I YANKED..AND RELEASED...  HE LANDED AT MY FEET AGAIN WITHOUT ANY PRESSURE ON THE COLLAR...AND FOR THE NEXT HOUR THAT DOG WAS PERFECTLY BEHAVED...  WALKED NEXT TO ME QUIETLY WITH OTHER DOGS AROUND... GUINNEA HENS  RUNNING AROUND.... LAY DOWN AT MY CHAIR IN THE T TENT AT MY FEET... BUTTER WOULD NOT HAVE MELTED IN HIS MOUTH-- HE WAS SO IMPRESSED  WITH HIS NEW EDUCATON-- HE REALIZED IF HE HEARD ME SPEAK AND HE DID MUCH OF ANYTHING   THAT THING WOULD TIGHTEN AROUND HIS NECK....  ALL I WAS DOING BY SAYING "NO"  IS TO WARN HIM OF WHAT HE WAS ABOUT  TO  CAUSE TO HAPPEN TO HIMSELF....
IT IS TIMING...

THE REST OF TEH STORY IS I GAVE THE LEASH BACK TO THE OWNER... AND WE WERE NEARLY BACK TO GROUND ZERO AGAIN... SHE COULD NOT GET HIM IN THE CAR-- BY USING  THE  LIFT AND STUFF  METHOD ON THAT HUGE DOG... I WENT OVER AND QUIETLY ASKED THE DOG TO STEP INTO THE CAR-- HE KNEW WHAT WAS EXPECTED..AND JUMPED IN...

DON'T TELL ME THE DOG IS BAD..  THEY ARE SMART AND WILLFUL AND BRED TO BITE BULLS, CATTLE   ETC...  SO UNLESS YOU HAVE A BUNCH OF CATTLE WHICH YOU NEED TO HAVE CHASED AND BITTEN YOU WOULD PROBABLY BE BETTER OFF GETTING A DOG WHICH WAS NOT BRED WITH ALL THOSE  MUSCLES ALONG THE SIDE OF THEIR HEADS.    BUY ONE WITH LONG POINTY NOSES--  LIKE JACK RUSSELES...  LIKE WANDA....THEY ARE BRED TO NIP..  FEWER TEETH MARKS  --- LESS TISSUE DAMAGE...

A CHAIN COLLAR IS A TRAINING COLLAR-- IT WAS NEVER INTENDED TO HAVE CONSTANT PRESSURE ON THE DOG'S NECK.  IT IS TEH EQUIVALENT OF " PAY ATTENTION  DANM IT"

IN REALITY YOU MUST NOT LET THE DOG TRAIN YOU TO PULL AGAINST IT. .....IT IS AN IQ TEST...

MOST PEOPLE I  TALK TO SAY "HE JUST PULLS AND I CAN'T STOP HIM.. SO I PUT THIS LEATHER COLLAR ON HIM SO  HE IS MORE COMFORTABLE..."
THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG THERE... THE DOG IS HAPPIEST AND MOST COMFORTABLE LEARNING TO BEHAVE, NOT NEEDING ANY COLLAR....
MY PARENTS  USED TO SAY  "  IF YOU DON'T DISCIPLINE YOUR DOG ( OR CHILD) THE WORLD WILL"

GEORGE IS THE HAPPIEST, BEST CARED FOR DOG I KNOW OF.   HE IS EDUCATED, DISCIPLINED... NOT TRAINED.

NOW AS FOR PURE EXCITMENT---

ANN TOOK HER HUSBAND TO THE AIRPORT FOR A FLIGHT  AT ABOUT 9AM...TO FLORIDA... WE CAME BACK FROM LUNDCH TO FIND 13 PEOPLE SHOT T FORT LAUDERDALE-- YUP  HE WAS TO HAVE LANDED WITH IN 30 M INUTES OF THE SHOOTING........ SHE STARTED IN TRYHNG  TO REACH  HIM... AND AFTER NO SUCCESS- WE STARTED IN THE FLIGHT CHECKER BIT.. AND FOUND HE HAD NOT "DEPLANED"   YET WHEN THE SHOOTING OCCURRED...
SHE WROTE THIS EMAIL TO ME ABOUT 7PM...
Michael’s plane and 10 others are still waiting to get to a gate. About 2000 people total he said. And a day of dieting, all he has had is 2 little bags of potato chips and 2 diet cokes. He did want to loose weight, but I don’t think this is what he had in mind….
**
Got off the plane a little before 9 PM along with all the other people who had been stranded there. No transportation, no food, they had said something about hotel rooms but who knows. Not a great day, but at least he didn't get shot.
