APPARENTLY  THE ONCOMING STORM COULD BE SERIOUS...-- THE CONCEPT OF ME KEEPING THE DRIVEWAY OPEN AT 2AM WITH MY SPOONSIZE PLOW--GIVES ME CONCERN..

THE USUAL PLAN IS TO PLOW EVERY 4 INCHES  WHICH MEANS I CAN JUST RUN AT IT-- IT ALL SOUNDS PERFECT UNTIL THE WIND BLOWS IT ALL BACK AGAIN..
I DO HAVE A FRONT END BUCKET-- WHICH EVENTUALLY WILL CLEAR ABOUT ANYTHING---

IT IS THAT EVENTUALLY PART THAT GETS ME..

WITH SNOW COMES COLD..  COLD IS NOT MY FAVORITE-- I DO HAVE A SNOWSUIT, PILOT'S FUNNY HAT WITH EARS.... AND LEATHER  FUZZY GLOVES--BUT I NEED ADDITIONAL PEOPLE HERE TO WATCH ME SLIDE AROUND THE DRIVEWAY AND BE SURE  I AM STILL RIGHT SIDE UP.

WHAT  WE  NEED IS AN OVERNIGHT PARTY-- WATCH THE PUPPIES--- KEEP ALL THE FIRES GOING-- AND KEEP THEIR EYE ON  THE TRACTOR.

PROBABLY THERE WILL BE NO PIZZA DELIVERY... SO WE BETTER STOCK UP.

AND MAKE SURE THE GENERATORS ARE RUNNING.-- THE DOG FOOB BINS ARE FULL-- AND JUST FOR GOOD LUCK--- ALL THE STOCK TANKS ARE FILLED WITH WATER..

ONE FOOT OF SNOW CONCERNS BUT  DOES  NOT PANIC ME--- BUT YESTERDAY THERE WAS A WEATHER REPORT   "OVER 2 FEET IN EASTERN MASS"  THAT CAN BE MORE CHALANGE...  ESPECIALLY IF IT BLOWS..

ONE GOOD THING--- THERE WILL BE NO POO TIO PICK...-  BEING WARM---IT DISAPPEARS IN ONE FOOT OF SNOW...................TIL SPRING..................
*******************
WE ARE RUNNING AN ICU  IN TH EHOUSE.......VANILLA-S FOOT   SHE BEGAN TO WORK AT THE BANDAGE SO I RE DID IT  AND HAVE O KEEP HER WITHIN SIGHT SO SHE DOES NOT EAT TH E  BANDAGE-- THE COST OF RETRIEVING A BANCDAGE FROM A GUT IS VERY LARGE...

AND WE HAVE FIRST SPAY  WILLOW-- DOING FINE-- THEN YESTERDAYS SPAYS  ROXANNE AND LOLA BOTH SLIGHTLY ON TH E BIAS STILL...
ADD THAT TO NOEL AND PUPS..  THE HOUSE IS  "WELL USED"
****************

FASCINATING FACT FOR TODAY...

100 YEARS AGO-- BETTY-- WHO WAS THE FIRST VOLUNTEER TO SLEEP ON THE FLOOR WHILE PUPS WERE BORN...-- BACK WHEN SWIFTERS WERE NEW-- BETTY BOUGHT ONE FOR ME-- WHICH WAS VERY NICE  EXCEPT A SHOVEL IS MORE TO TH EPOINT AROUND HERE..A SWIFTER FOR THE DUST COLLECTION  WAS WAY BEYOND WHAT WAS CALLED FOR... BUT I PUT IT IN TH E OVERFLOW ROOM

UNTIL NOW-- WHEN I HAD A VINYL FLOOR PUT IN WHAT IS NOW MY ROOM--  WHEN I GOT OUT OF BED AND WALKED AROUND BAREFOOT... THERE WERE PEBBLES--- SO I FOUND THAT OLD SWIFTER AND SWIFTED--- AND I COULD WALK AROUND BAREFOOT.-- I COULD FEEL THE DIFFERENCE A SWIFTER MADE..

.I REALIZE-- IN A FARM SITUATION THERE ARE THINGS YOU CAN NOT SEE THAT SHOULD PREVENT YOU FROM WALKING BAREFOOT... LIKE HOOKWORMS AND TETANAS--

I DON'T THINK THEY SWIFT....
IMMAGINE ... ME... WITH A SWIFTABLE ROOM !!!
***************

ENOUGH NONSENSE-- I HAVE TO THINK HOW TO SURVIVE THE  STORM... LOOSING ELECTRICITY MEANS LOOSING HEAT...-- MAYBE IF   PEOPLE COULD TAKE A DOG OVERNIGHT IT MIGHT BE GOOD

LIKE POLLY AND BOB--  TAKE  BAILEY AND LUNA???

February 6, 2013

i have finally joined the elite group of those who have been locked in the nutt house.... and it took a while.
the string broke and lifting the latch was a major problem

i had 2 other alternatives    crawl out a doggie door-- or ..... i wear one of those 'i have fallen and i can't get up ' things..

i just thought "i am locked in the nutt house"  did not qualify as a 911 call-- since i was not where i could yell the problem

armed with a steak knife and a small hammer, i finally got the thing lifted..

i go out early every morning to start the wood stove-- it has not been bad in there   this  morning-- before the stove,   it was 57 degrees low by the muppies bed..

we have only 4 weeks before we start on the upswing for spring...
and we have only 10 days before olive's impending "confinement"
*-***************
puppies...
we certainly do have our hands full - -however........ the plan now is -- to move them along so they are ready for megan to school...

we need to have them achieve boredom-- i have discussed this before---you can not teach them anything until they stop being fascinated with  the real world...
to this end, we need the volunteers who have been around for a while to take a pup-- with an old timer-- bailey, luna, tucker, fido  all the bored ones...  and just go sit  - starbucks... food courts... bookstore.. coffee shops..

and for those volunteers who have not been around for a while... there is also the aspect of put one in the car-- go somewhere and come back again.. any of you who have a service dog of ours.. gay and heydawg come to mind--when you and jerry are out "running errands"  pick up a pup-- hey dawg would be a good influence-- you don't even have to take them out of th e car..

patterning them to going somewhere and coming back is another concept they have to learn.
maria will be doing this on a 3 day stint as she comes and goes from marlboro
on mondays and thursdays.

we started the name calling with 3 of us and the muppies...  3 cans 3 spoons  3 corners       of the room   we didn't do too badly.. maybe 3 dogs at a time would be better to start-- but they were getting it.    we went thru 6 cans of food---it works-- we did have to put electrical tape on the back of thier necks to tell them apart-- onyx was white and wendy was green... etc
my wonderful clock tells me it is Wednesday which will hopefully be lo (person  "lo")

yesterday's person was shelia-- that is "shelia"   of meat grinding fame-- except yesterday she was hung up on the fact that i need a bathtub-- so she took me to the bathtub store and had me try on some.

i will bet darn few of you have ever had the pleasure of trying on a bathtub.   well i now have- much to the amazement of  bailey and bentley who were concerned about me lying in the white thing/ i need a bathtub where i can lie flat without my knees poking up
like a 6'  tub

after much disagreement-- shelia finally  agreed i needed a 6' tub--and then she got off on depth-- which translated into just how thick was i???

gotta hand it to her... she is very thorough and does not quit.-

************
and the dryer works--  when it is done it seems to flash L R  -which we do not understand-- so she took the cd home with her  making the statement that "someone ought to read the directions"

can you immagine??
***********
ron spent th eday here and  fixed a bunch of things we did not know were broken..... and being my son in law-- he had the audacity to throw our many of my prized collections-- like halves of hinges...
************
as we change schedules around and try and fit them together..
a lot (?everyone?) is panic'd---  several business people told me this would be true-- but i was not aware of the depth of concern- several people have totally come unglued.

we have a big challenge ahead to double the number of service dogs we can donate to people in 2014 -- got to remember that is our goal..to double would be 2 dogs a month-- 24 in 2014-- and we don't have that number of pups yet...

thus far in sdp's carreer we have met some terriffic goals-- this is just one more
and thanks to the camera people we have the food bill paid for --- so far.
will we ever be a smoothly running factory of perfect pups  ?? not likely...
but as long as we can put out dogs who will get people back on their feet smiling--
we have to try
.and we are getting enough cardboards to keep them tidy--  i think i have to get a bigger dumpster too....

******
now for truth in advertizing....  we have had one complaint about the puppy breath... one person called to complain that her vial of puppy breath was empty... there was no fluid in it..

i will  leave you with that one.

February 5, 2013

i don't know who sent us the omaha steak "family  package"  and the girl scout cookies... but it certainly will be nice to have with olive moving in.  usually when theY deliver all night long we have to be resolved to  chinese food or pizza

olive's mom-- priscilla said she is getting round..ER......  so on we go..
****
we took a bump off vanilla's foot yesterday at georges  she has had it since birth-- but recently it started to bleed.

today's vet visit  is willow for spaying...   i hope megan has it organized  because  sheila has offered to take me someplace to try out a bath tub.

i am not sure how you try out a bath tub  but she is on the project  and we can take the gopro.  remember it was her idea to shred the beef with her husbands wood chipping fish grinder....  SHOULD BE A FUN morning

mark should have some good shots of jack and i shredding-- i wore a hazmat suit--- mary supervised..

*****************
i have carrots inside the front door for mary if she brays...

****************
pumpkin  is doing really well with her new partner.. apparently they practiced at the beverly hospital.

******************
lulu report  from california

Lulu is behaving herself. She visited two different dog parks this weekend, and she liked the opportunity to run around off leash. She is very shy in social settings like that, so I have to run around with her a bit to get her involved. She is also a bit protective of her home environment - whenever someone new comes over, she'll issue a low growl, unless I walk over and show her that the person is not harmful.

I don't mind that she's shy, I find it very endearing.

She's the sweetest, most well-behaved dog I've ever met.

Courtney

****  i wrote back that lulu was probably  just grumbling- conversation wise-
like "there is someone i don't recognize" and waiting for courtney to explain it to her.
************
a business item --my daughter - janinie- has a very nice- slightly strange house with a sizable  lovely indoor  pool. she is considering renting it to some corporation who has employees who will have to be in the north of boston area for 6 months or such-- anyone know of that situation?
she is 1/4 mile off  RT 95.

earlene hAS COVERED OVERNIGHT ... AND IS LEAVING FOR WORK-- SO IT IS MY TURN..

February 4, 2013

and the winner is.......406... patty from portland oregon--

we managed to show it live on the explore camera by setting it up in th e orffice area of th e house ( warmer)  we almost did it in th e yard... but  the table just fit-- and the fire was cozy.
we showed the putting  on of the stickers ( numbers) and the entry of the  hens... who cooperated within 5 minutes..-- then the pealing off of the stickers... and the chickens went back to th e  hen house. it   really works very well...
*************
lesson of the day---
noel's puppy poo is very loose  YOU ALL NEED TO KNOW THIS-  i did talk to goerge and he mad a very logical suggestion-- give them a tiny bit of the acidopalis ?  to get the gut going in the right direction..
we dont seem to be able to locate ours at the moment-- so i will get some on our daily vet trip... vanilla has a strange lump on her foot--

tomorrow we start 4 days of spay neuters.  and will need to set up an ICU here without upsetting noel..  lori?????
****************
i read the directions on the  gopro  and some comment was made about "some older computers did not have a proper xxxx plug to keep batteries charged

it also does not read th e memory card--
my guess is my ancient but honorable computer..

it was $3500 dell  about 8 years ago..  course by now my cell phone does more.... and theresa's is a new laptop--- if i could just find the on button/.....
*******
earlene was here yesterday and will be here overnight,.... much to chaos pleasure.  when earlene sits with noel and the nuppies  chaos stands at the door and "talks" with a collection of noises...  very interesting.

****************
speaking of noises---  mary is coming up to the front door  and braying-- this is for a handful of carrots which is kept just inside the front  door.

an added attraction....
**************
steph - washing machine steph ---said she would be here today.  she is a good tiny puppy sitter.

we need to make a distinction  between the capabilities of th e various puppy sitters.--
micromanaging puppies makes for a very ;lazy mom..   not micromanaging makes for a very messy bed.
so it is a balancing game

.and then there are sitters capable of delivery situations-- we need to line up those for the impending olicve arrival..that  would be earlene-- gwen--hilary--megan-- colleen 1- did i forget anyone??

*****************
bob will be here today-- there are a couple chores.....  we need fencing around the coal stove itn the deagle house and the wood/coal stove in the nutt house
 good indoor jobs'

**************
jack started the dryer vent- has the pieces all lined up and will i finish it tomorrow morning... we will be cracking a bottlo of champainge over it !!
*******************

and then we can take down all the scaffolding in the arena which is dripping with laundry..carrying around frozen 6' spikes of  bedding looses it's charm.--- at least it is  clean.

we are desparate for that dryer..
***************

i will get out of here somehow this morning---

February 3, 2013

OF ALL THE ADS I GET ON THIS FOOL MACHINE   I GOT ONE THIS MORNING WHICH REMINDED ME-- THE DURANGO HAS A REMOTE STARTER-- THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL THING.

IT IS AMAZING WHAT I CAN FORGET.

I HAVE TO GET BETTER ORGANIZED...

TO THAT END---- I AM GOING TO TAKE THAT GO PRO CAMERA AND DO A WALK AROUND AFTER MEGAN GETS HERE ( SO I DON'T START THEM BARKING...)  MOSTLY I NEED THE FRESH AIR--

WHAT AM I SAYING.... MAKE THAT A RIDE AROUND ON THE GOLF CART AT LEAST

THE PLACE REALLY NEEDS A PROFESSIONAL LOOKOVER MORNING AND NIGHT-  ON DAYS MEGAN IS HERE  SHE DOES THE WALK AROUND AND COMES AND TELLS ME ANYTHING I NEED TO KNOW....  BUT THE AFTERNOONS WHEN WE HAVE BASICALLY KIDS FEEDING , IS NOT WORKING-- WE HAVE SOME SUPER KIDS-- BUT THERE ARE GAPS IN THEIR HEADS...TELL THEM TO GO AND BE SURE EVERYONE HAS WATER-- AND THEY DO THAT  AND DON'T NOTICE TH EGATE IS OPEN.  IT IS A TEENAGE THING.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GIVE THEM A LIST OF WHAT TO CHECK-- BECAUSE THE LIST WOULD BE TOOOO LONG..
. IF THE 2 BUCKETS OF WATER FOR THE CHUPPIES IS EMPTY  IT MEANS THEY NEED 3 BUCKETS
IF YOU PUT DOWN FRESH WATER AND THEY DIVE INTO IT...  WHY???

AND IS THAT REALLY AN EXTENSION CORD RUNNING UNDER THAT DOOR?

IT WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR EVERYONE HERE TO  KEEP AN EYE OPEN -- I DON'T NEED TO KNOW IF YOU PICK UP A NAIL OUTSIDE THE SHOP-  BUT IF YOU DO YOU MIGHT  LOOK  FOR 10 SECONDS AND SEE IF THERE ARE  ANY MORE. (OR WAVE AROUND THE 2' MAGNET IF YOU CAN FIND IT)

PAUL WILL BE SPENDING LESS TIME HERE AS VOLUNTEER-- SO THERE ARE THINGS THAT HE DID CARDBOARD DISTRUCTION, TRASH AND OLD SOFA   MANAGEMENT.
THANKS TO OUR CAMERA PEEPS  THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT CARDBOARD PROCESSING PROBLEM...
*****
PEGGY OFFERED HER HANDY PERSON TO DEAL WITH THE DRYER VENT.  I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE URGE TO JUST CUT A HOLE, STICK THE PIPE  THRU AND LET HIM FIX IT WHEN HE GETS HERE NEXT WEEK.  DUCT TAPE GOES A LONG WAY.
*****
MARK HAS SOME SUPER PICTURES OUT THERE  (http://servicedogproject.shutterfly.com/pictures )

THE  BLACK PUPS RUNNING DOWN THE WALL OF THE WHITE ARENA ARE SPECTACULAR.

I AM ALSO TOLD THAT CHAOS DID NOT GIVE HIM A FREE RIDE WHEN HE GOT THERE-- HE HAD TO GO GET A COOKIE BEFORE SHE LET HIM IN TH EPUPPY HILL AREA WITH HER PUPS.

TIM TELLS ME I SHOJLD GET ANOTHER BATTERY FOR THE  HERO2 GOPRO.. IT IS STILL IN THE EXPERIMENTAL STAGE-- I THINK I HAVE OPERATOR TROUBLE-- I DON.T THINK WE ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN RTURNING IT OFF.
ONE OF THOSE IF ALL ELSE FAILS.... READ THE DIRECTONS.  BUT TIM SAID WE SHOULD GET SOME EXTRA BATTERIES ANYWAY  ( OUR ABILITY TO PUSH THE "OFF" BUTTON IS IN QUESTON)

I AM WORKING ON IT.
GOT TO GET IT PERFECTED BY OLIVE'S DELIVERY... ??2 WEEKS??
******************
NOW ABOUT THE SEX LIVES OF OUR YOUNG GIRLS .... NAMELY SCARLOTT AND OPAL....

DO THE MATH.... WE PUT OUT 15 DOGS IN 2012  AND I MADE THE STATEMENT TO EXPLORE  WE COULD DOUBLE THAT IN 2014

NOW GO BACKWARDS   GRADUATES OF 2014  SHOULD BE BORN IN 2013.
 PICK A MONTH... ?SEPTEMBER?
FOR PUPS BORN BY SEPT-  MOMS NEED TO BE BRED BY JUNE-JULY  --
FEMALES COME  IN HEAT EVERY 6 MONTHS USUALLY

IF SCARLOT COMES IN HEAT IN APRIL  SHE MIGHT NOT BE IN HEAT AGAIN TIL OCTOBER-NOVEMBER  2013   WHICH WOULD GIVE US BIRTHS BEGINNING  IN 2014 FOR GRADUATES  2015-6

RIGHT NOW ... WE ARE SHORT DOGS...  WE HAVE MAYBE 8 FOR THIS YEAR(OLIVER -EBONY LITTERS)    -- AND MAYBE 13-14 CHUPPIES AND MUPPIES + NUPPIES 3  SO FAR  FOR  2014   WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE OOOPSIES TO GIVE US  THE NUMBER WE NEED.

WE COULD NOT DO THIS WITHOUT EXPLORE'S MONEY AND THE CAMERA PEOPLE'S  DONATIONS
VERY NERVE WRACKING... BUT THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO NEED DOGS.  WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO GO FOR IT.

OUR "CRAZY ACRES' WILL NEVER BE A SMOOTHY RUNNING PUPPY PRODUCTION MACHINE... AND WE MUST STRUGGLE TO KEEP THE NUTTY QUALITY IN FULL EFFECT.....  WHILE DOING A SUPER JOB OF PUPPY MKANAGEMENT, OUR VOLUNTEERS MUST HAVE FUN  WHILE KEEPING THEIR EYE ON THE  FACT THAT PEOPLE ARE WAITING FOR DOGS THAT WE CAN PRODUCE.

TO THAT END IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED WE POST A VOLUNTEER SCHEDULE SO WE CAN BETTER PLAN MEGAN AND MY TIME FOR TRAINING.... WHILE KEEPING POUR EYES OPEN FOR  POSSIBLE  TRAINER TRAINEEEEES .

SO THAT WILL BE ON THE TV ROOM DOOR-- ALONG WITH  THE OVERNIGHT SCHEDULE..

WE NEED A STRICT SCHEDULE-- ALONG WITH A  LOOSEY GOOSEY ATMOSPHERE

GOT TO TRY IT..

SOMEONE ( WITH BREAKFAST) HAS ARRIVED... BENTLY SAYS SO

NOEL AND PUPS...
EVERYBODY'S DOING FINE... BLUE GWEN WAS HERE OVERNIGHT AND EVERYONE OF THE CAMERA PEOPLE SAID SHE WAS DOING A LOVELY ATTENTIVE JOB.

I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE NOTICES HOW MUCH EASIER IT IS TO COUNT TO THREE INSTEAD OF 8  BEFORE YOU STEP ON THEIR BLANKETS.
THESE 3 ARE TRAVELERS...

I THINK THE OTHER LITTERS HAVE TAKEN A WEEK TO "GET UP AND OVER" THE MOMMY MOUNTAIN.

THESE CAN DO IT NOW.
COURSE THEY DON'T HAVE TO FIGHT FOR A NIPPLE

********************
PRISCILLA REPORTS OLIVE IS LOOMING LARGE-- AND SEEMS FINE... LAST TIME SHE STOPPED WALKING A FEW DAYS AHEAD-- WE NEVER KNEW WHY.. SHE WAS ALL BETTER AS SOON AS SHE WHELPED...

**************
WHICH REMINDS ME... GEORGE IS BACK FROM AFRICA-  HE WILL GO BACK TO WORK MONDAY..
****
NOW THAT WE HAVE A MORE PORTABLE CAMERA ( EVEN IF IT IS WIRED TO THE  WALL)  WE NEED TO FIX A FEW OTHER LOCATIONS FOR IT... LIKE ON TOP OF MY PUZZLE RACK  SO IT WOULD SHOW THE KITCHEN AND MY DESK-- SO WHEN  I PLAY WITH THE CHUPPIES PEOPLE CAN SEE THEM.

AND AT LEAST 3 ARE YUPPYING.

DAMIEN IS AMPHAIDEXTROUS-- AND MANAGED TO BAT ME IN THE NOSE-- IT IS A PRETTY GOOD TEAR...

BUD CAN DO SOME  YUPPY BIT..

SHORT DOGGIE

I NOW HAVE NOEL DUTY

February 1, 2013

there was no DD  yesterday.. problem being -- there was no yesterday  just one long 48 hour day

result being 3 lovely pups and a fridge overflowing with chinese food.

it was--- and is  an education worth sharing...

noel is not what you would call an enthusiastic mother starting with the fact that i have never seen pups born with as little effort...  luna's or   chaos's contractions were all body experiences-- in  noel's case- it was more--  , she   would wander around looking bewildered and something would fall out

i did not put the exact details in th e explore comments because things were happening too fast  ... now that we have 3 apparently healthy pups - i can explain our actions a bit better.

george had done an ultrasound and said 4 pups.....

what fell out of noel at 7am had not been a puppy for at least a week.and i thought.... thousands of people watching and we could have 3 dead pups next... when she did not have any real contractions  and was only slightly  uncomfortable- we finally went to the vets.- thinking ??c-section? it was somewhere between 60 and 65 days since she was bred.

so they took xrays-- and 2 of the vets thought we should just wait on any oxytocin ( produces stronger contractions)- they both said 2 normal pups and one that did not look as big as the other 2.. but suggested we wait til her contractinos were normal.

we started home  - stopping at staples for a quick purchase -- i came out to find noel had dropped her firstborn  in the van-- megan was in attendence -- and it all seemed normal- so we drove home. -- settling noel in what was to be her whelping area.- the best she could do is decide whatever that thing was--it smelled funny.- and we settled in--?3 hours later she passed a piece of something and an hour after that an absolutely  lifeless pup--  i struggled to get it started with puppy cpr...- to no avail.- by the vet's count- we only had th e one other pup in there and it did it look as "normal" as the other 2--

i tried to get the camera people prepared for another disaster when after 2 minor pushes  another lifeless pup was born.. except we could get this one going...  it screamed-- we  cheered-- and everyone felt better  we had 2 pups... both nursing...

we did not have the last  afterbirth-- so the vet suggested we give her one shot of oxytocin to see if she would pass it.
an  hour later megan took her out to pee, and came back in- still waiting for the aftrbirth when megan said  she thought she saw it coming-- and then said-- it is white--and then "  IT IS A PUPPY-- A HARL !!"
turned out to be a female beautifully marked harlequin.  who screamed--normally and nursed right away..... the final 2 afterbirths came after that.

sooooo ..... for all you "normal" breeders who tell me   "go have an xray to find out....."      let us go back ..

i made the statement months ago  i didn't bother to have an xray/ultrasound to determine the number of pups because  i have never had them be right"
george is gonna kill me for that one.

that is a remark that still holds true--- it was at some point valuable knowledge to know IF there were any pups...   but
george said 4 from the ultrasound -- technically he said "at least 4' so he is covered...

after one born  dead-- 2 other vets  said 2 possibly 3 when there were still 4..

how does that make you feel about xrays in general???

"oh... your arm is not broken"  and a few days later "well maybe you have a slight hairline..."

medicine is an art.... not a science.

 today schedule?
we have none

we will need experienced puppy wizzers-- because noel has not go into the full time care business yet...
